U.S. monkeypox cases are very rare. Monkeypox does not occur naturally in the United States, but cases have happened that were associated with international travel or importing animals from areas where the disease is more common.

November 2021 Travel-Associated Case
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Maryland Department of Health confirmedexternal icon on November 16, 2021 a case of monkeypox in a U.S. resident who recently returned from Nigeria to the United States. CDC is supporting state and local health officials, airline and travel industry partners, and other stakeholders to identify people who had possible contact with the patient. Because it can take up to 21 days for symptoms to develop after infection, contacts are being asked to monitor their health for that amount of time. CDC will continue to collaborate with partners to ensure the success of this investigation to help prevent additional cases of monkeypox in the United States.

July 2021 Travel-Associated Case
CDC and the Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed on July 15, 2021 a case of human monkeypox in a U.S. citizen who traveled from Nigeria to the United States on two commercial flights. CDC supported state and local health officials to identify more than 200 people who had possible contact with the patient. Contacts were asked to monitor their health for 21 days. In early September, 21 days had passed without additional cases identified, and the monitoring period for the remaining contacts ended. Strong collaboration between CDC, state and local health departments, airline and airport partners, and other stakeholders involved in this investigation helped to prevent additional cases of monkeypox in the U.S. related to this case.

2003 Outbreak from Imported Mammals
In 2003, forty-seven confirmed and probable casesexternal icon of monkeypox were reported from six states—Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. All people infected with monkeypox in this outbreak became ill after having contact with pet prairie dogs. The pets were infected after being housed near imported small mammals from Ghana. This was the first time that human monkeypox was reported outside of Africa.

U.S. government places $119 million order for 13 million freeze-dried Monkeypox vaccines

Following confirmation that monkeypox has made its way to the U.S., the government ordered millions of doses of a vaccine that protects against the virus.

The order will convert existing smallpox vaccines, which are also effective against monkeypox, into freeze-dried versions, which have a longer shelf life. The converted vaccines will be manufactured in 2023 and 2024, the company says.

The U.S. isn’t the only country stocking up on the vaccine. On Thursday, Bavarian Nordic said an unidentified European country had secured a contract to obtain the vaccine.

“While the full circumstances around the current monkeypox cases in Europe remain to be elucidated, the speed of which these have evolved, combined with the potential for infections beyond the initial case going undetected, calls for a rapid and coordinated approach by the health authorities, and we are pleased to assist in this emergency situation,” said Paul Chaplin, president and CEO of Bavarian Nordic in a statement.


Monkeypox cases investigated in Europe, US and Canada

The first case of the disease in the UK was reported on 7 May. The patient had recently travelled to Nigeria, where they are believed to have caught the virus before travelling to England, the UK Health Security Agency said.

There are now nine confirmed cases in the UK. The source of these infections has not yet been confirmed but cases seem to have been "locally acquired", the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

In Europe, one confirmed case was reported in Sweden on Thursday, as well as one in Italy and a suspected case in France. Swedish authorities said they were not sure how the individual had contracted the virus, but local media report that the individual in Italy had recently returned from the Canary Islands.

Five confirmed cases were also reported in Portugal on Wednesday, as well as seven in Spain.

In North America, health authorities in the US state of Massachusetts also confirmed that a man has been infected with Monkeypox.

He had recently travelled to Canada, where local media report that 13 suspected cases of the virus are being investigated.

There are now nine cases in the United Kingdom, at least 29 in Portugal, and 17 in Canada, as well as cases in Spain, France, Sweden, Italy, and Belgium.

The case fatality ratio of monkeypox has historically ranged from 0 to 11 % in the general population and has been higher among young children. In recent times, the case fatality ratio has been around 3-6%.

Some reports indicate this is the milder version with around 1 percent.

Health chiefs in the UK have issued a direct plea to men who have sex with men, telling them to come forward if they develop a rash on their face or genitals.

The outbreak has been described as 'unusual' by experts because person-to-person transmission of monkeypox was thought to be extremely rare.

Until now the virus had only ever been detected in four countries outside of western or central Africa, and all of the cases had direct travel links to the continent.

The infections in Portugal were picked up at a sexual health clinic, where the men sought help for lesions on their genitals.

“The community of men who have sex with men has been historically incredibly stigmatized with relation to virus infection, so I want to be very careful to say that that link has not been finalized yet,” Rasmussen said.

“Everybody should keep in mind how monkeypox can be transmitted, and that is through shared air, through aerosols, through direct or indirect contact, but through prolonged physical proximity with a person who is infected.”

Australia's party scene has been put on high alert after the nation recorded its first two cases of monkeypox which are believed to be sex-related.

Two men from Sydney and Melbourne have both returned from Europe infected with the rare tropical disease.

Experts fear the known cases are the tip of the iceberg, with the majority of patients not linked to each other, suggesting it is spreading more widely.

On Friday, NSW's chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant sent out the urgent warning for gay men in particular to watch out for the symptoms and seek immediate help if worried

'You can imagine that some settings, such as sex on premises venues or other events and gatherings may lead to sort of what we've seen as super spreading events.

Unknown yet how significant it will turn out to be. Usually it is something they can isolate, and primarily travel driven. However, in this case they are seeing community transmission, and now cases in 11 countries where it is not usually found.

We may just be seeing the fallout of a superspreader event. But if it continues to spread others could come into contact. It appears to be the milder strain as far as lethality, which is good. Though that still is associated with a 1 percent case fatality rate. The more severe is associated with up to 11 percent.

With greater supportive care in the West it is thought the rate might be lower.

So they believe it's spreading sexually, where normally, it has to be contact with an infected monkey and doesn't spread person to person. Possibly, but you could say the same for fornication as it being a "receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet" in other words.. they sinned, and that's the consequence.
Now if we never learned our lessons from HIV like not screening for it in blood transfusions and not properly sterilizing surgical and dental instruments, then it'll spread to populations that don't "deserve" it.. but, as of right now it's probably going to stick within groups of fornicators and drug users.
