• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I didn't look very far back in this forum, so I'm not sure this if subject has come up before, but I'm just wondering how you folks feel about this show.

I really like it alot, and I watch it whenever I come across it. (Adrian Monk is a detective who has OCD...for those of you who haven't seen it). My family calls him 'mom's hero!'

I wish they would show a few other forms of ocd, as well (they have a little in Monk's brother Ambrose...but I think that could be improved). But on the whole, I think this show helps the general public know what we go through. Most folks that know I have OCD are afraid to say they watch it, thinking I might be offended.

Last year's Christmas show even showed the folks at the police office Christmas party, singing Christian Christmas carols! I don't know if this show is run by Christians, but it seems to not have all the violence that is seen on other detective shows.

Any thoughts?

I have heard about this show, and was wondering if the "intrusive thought" element of ocd was portrayed. Most people identify ocd as "tendencies" to wash hands, check things, have contamination fears, count, etc., but do not seem to understand that intrusive thoughts are the most significant burden for many ocd sufferers. I know it's just a show, but was wondering how and if the issue of intrusive thoughts is portrayed.

I haven't seen too much of our kinds of thoughts on the show (wish there was), but at least ocd is getting out in the open to the public.

I love monk. Its a little exxagerated, but there are moments, especially during his breakdowns (once or twice a season) where I can truly sympathize with the character.

Monk is neat, but I find it a poor portrayal of OCD. It's very important to show the obsessive side and not just the compulsive side of the disorder. Everything always prefers to show the compulsive side only. I am actually a big fan of the movie The Aviator because it is the best portrayal of both sides.

HI Seajoy... I'll have to check that show out. I've never seen it. Obsessions are probably hard to portray... they are hard enough to talk about in a transparent way. It's so much easier to be vague about obsessive thoughts.. cause it always seems that people will be shocked or think we are truly nuts. But I think when we open up and are transparent about these things we can bring comfort to one another in just knowing that other brothers and sisters in Christ suffer in the same way.
Thanks for mentioning the show. Can't wait to see it.
