I would like to hear a preacher that gets up and preaches God's word. Instead they all seem to follow a formula that includes comic relief and talking about themselves for at least a part of the sermon. I hate that.

No offense preachers, but during the service, I don't want your comedy and I don't care about what you have done and what you think about movies and sports. I just want to hear about God not about you and your silly life, your kids, vacation, or family dog.

Please shut up and preach.

Baptist Sermon Outlines

I laugh at this. A modern day outline for anyone who wants to preach. It's a 3 point sermon on the bible. Oh dear.......

I agree, I also have a problem with many modern preachers that I've heard, so i usually half listen to them at best. I've found no preacher to really be helpful since fall of two years ago. I've look up sermons of older (and dead) Christian preachers to really listen to good and powerful sermons.

I have no problem mixing a little humor up in a sermon. Or a story that may help a person understand a tough passage the pastor is preaching on. Take someone who I like, such as Matt Chandler. He is a verse by verse expository preacher, but occasionally adds in what I mentioned above.

I do agree in modern evangelical preaching, it almost seems like the message is built around stories and not Scripture. Around points and not the passage. That is wrong.

I'm not funny so I stay away from comedy in the pulpit.

The closest I ever came to humor in the pulpit was entitling one of my sermons "You're So Vain, You Probably Think This Psalm is About You".

There are a lot of inefficient and even heretical preachers out there, but there are a lot of Godly, faithful preachers out there as well. God's led me to listen to a number of them, here's a few:

John Piper, John MacArthur, Paul Washer, Jesse Barrington, Tim Conway, Bob Jennings, and there are more. Sermon Audio has a lot of good preachers and a lot of helpful sermons. illbehonest.com is another good resource.

I agree, give Dr. S. Lewis Johnson a hearing: Believers Chapel - Online Teaching and let me know what you think.

My pastor definitely preaches the Word. However, he does on occasion throw in some humor, and we definitely get to know his hobbies, etc.

On occasion he will talk about himself. But the purpose is to demonstrate that he is a "fallen man" just like the rest of us.

We get about 95% Bible, 5% of the rest.

In my honest and humble opinion if that 5% is strategically woven into the sermon it definitely helps for the cause of the Kingdom.

I say this out of respect.

However, if things get out of balance, then I would have to agree with your comment.

But a little dash of "this and that" certainly can help if properly done.

:)

Please shut up and preach.

I hear ya brother. We're blessed to not have to worry about this at our church and I personally have a hunch that a lot of this "typical preacher banter" might go away if they were forced to preach straight through the Bible. Our preacher does, and although he does have a great sense of humor, humor only arises when appropiate and never as a part of a rhetorical plan to keep the audience engaged. I really do think it might be related to this. So FWIW, here's some articles I enjoyed about this:

Maybe you could find a church that does this?

Just for fun... Look up "Regulative Principle of Worship" and see what comes up. Basically, there is an idea that whatever does and does not happen at our "worship services" should be regulated by God's revealed will (the Bible) he does tell us how He wants us to worship Him. And there are a lot of negative consequences to adding or taking away from that.
Look what happened to Aaron's two sons.
There is a way to do the right thing (worship/church) the wrong way!

"Preachers today are licensed and ordained by the church; men of old were ordained and sent by God. Preachers today go forth armed with degrees and credentials; men of old went forth anointed by the Holy Spirit. Preachers today are questioned by committees and hired to preach what the church believes; men of old came preaching, “Thus saith the Lord.” Preachers today give themselves to programs, visitation, church business; men of old gave themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word. Preachers today preach and men are persuaded to move their membership; men of old preached and, “they were pricked in their hearts and cried, Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Preachers today pray and the organ plays softly; Elijah prayed and the fire of God fell. Preachers today are afraid that they will offend someone; Paul was afraid that he would not. If there is no offense, the gospel has not been preached."
