Moderation ( Plead Your Case)

I think the concept of the new changes at CF is that each forum rule itself so I think they want the moderators at least for the most part to come from the forums themselves. I don't see any real need for them to be SDA however as they are really just the referee's. they are not driving the discussion and should not be limiting discussion aside from rule violations. It seems to have little in common with running a lesson study or teaching a class.

I haven't seen a moderator yet who doesn't participate in discussions, therefore, my concern and suggestion or opinion remains.

I would definitely never go into that direction in my own forum at Maritime SDA OnLine.

While the comparison of this forum to a church can be used (I have used it before), we have to recognize that this is not an SDA institution. We do not have membership to this particular forum, but to CF as a whole. This does not have an organizational structure like a church often does. What is more, a moderator is not an executive, or a pastor, or an elder, or a deacon.

I see a moderator as a person of influence, therefore, I would prefer a SDA moderator of influence over a non-SDA moderator of influence, if you catch my drift.

That's how it's always been here at CF. We didn't have enough mods of each denomination to staff all of the congregational forums with people from only those groups. We've always had some non-SDA mods here, and they've done a great job. A good mod is a good mod, regardless of his or her personal theological beliefs. It's not the same thing as having them teach Sabbath School or pastor an SDA church.

No, previously if mods were working in forums where they were not members of that denomination, they were not allowed to debate there. They could post fellowship and questions, just like everyone else. They could also make official staff posts. Our new pending rules will change that because now everyone will be allowed to debate here (at least in the debate sub-forum).

Also, something that you should realize is that under the new system, supermoderators can moderate in any forum at CF when necessary. Because the SDA forum is only a small part of CF, we as members here will still be under the authority of non-SDA staff. However, the most direct day-to-day moderation will be done by the forum mods.

This could be all irrelevant, though, because I don't think too many people who are not Adventists would apply to be mods in our forum anyway since the forum mods will now be chosen by each congregational forum.

In that case, it would be a good thing.

I guess this is where a majority vote would decide this issue and concern of mine.

It doesn't matter to me either way. My only concern is that we may not be able to find enough Adventists who are willing to do it. That has been a problem in the past. And it wouldn't be good to have only one or two mods. My personal preference would be to have at least five or six mods here. This forum has generated a huge number of reports in the past, and it's good to have several voices giving input in the reports in order to handle them fairly and minimize accusations of bias. Also, if our willing candidates are limited, I would rather have some non-SDA mods here than Adventists who would not make good mods just for the sake of putting in Adventist mods.

Another thing to consider is that the method under which new mods will be elected in general at CF is still under discussion in the vote on staff applicants wiki. The plan is, of course, to have the congregational forums elect their own moderators, but beyond that, the specific procedures haven't all been worked out yet. I think we can start nominating people and getting an idea of who is interested, but we may have to wait and see on some of the details before we actually vote on applications. Otherwise, we're going to have mod applications going into the Ecumenical Moderator Applications forum and being open to voting by all CF members. That's what's happening there now, and it's a mess.

That's fine. I don't intend to accept a position as a moderator anyway.

I just want you to know that I am only looking out for what is best for our church, and the members of it.

Hopefully you will find a moderator for this forum that will do what's best for the members of our church.

By the way, the issue that I had with the 3ABN threads is that it is not proper to degrade people. You must keep in mind that Danny and Linda are real people with real feelings. How much emotional hurt has these threads caused them? Please consider that.

Perhaps one day you will understand why I feel so strongly about this. Of course, sometimes people have to go through something similar before they can really understand how it feels to be the object of such contention.

A Progressive that I really think could be fair (yet we butt heads a lot...haha) is Mjona3. I don't think he'd have any trouble following the rules of moderation.

Another Progressive I'd nominate is Woobadooba but I think he said he couldn't be a moderator right now.

He doesn't agree with the 28 fundamental beliefs. Hey, I didn't pick the name or who falls under that label. But like it or not, it is what it is.

I'm a little surprised by this attack on Wooba, but I guess I shouldn't be.

God loves Woob just as much as He loves you or me.

Seriously, there will always be upheaval on this part of the forum if you don't have moderators who can see the good in the arguments of both traditionals and progressives here; somebody who can see both sides.

I appear to be cursed with this ability. I appreciate the logic and honesty of Country Doc and Woobadooba and yes, even DJ Conklin, while I also understand and appreciate the earnest heartfelt opinions of RCProtestants, and LoveEternal, and FreeIndeed.

Since I got in all that trouble over that Little Debbie comment a little over a week ago, I haven't visited here much. I wonder if this means they'll take that infraction off my record now??? But I digress.

For those who believe that your moderators should know about Adventism and issues that are unique to it, I am not totally ignorant concerning Adventism. I have a friend who has taught me much about your beliefs over the past year and a half.

As far as what would or would not be off limits, since that also seems to be of great concern here, anything that can be defended (or defended against), using the Bible should be fair game for discussion.

I believe it is a mistake to make moderator appointments a popularity contest. That, to me is a recipe for disaster.

Just a thought.

This forum needs mods who are not prejudice for one side or the other and also who don't feel the need to rebuke because they don't like someone's opinion on things.

Annie-I couldn't vote for you because of that nasty IM you sent me a few weeks back. You over stepped and took sides with someone who was continually 'baiting' and instigating upheaval. So I'm afraid you couldn't be a fair and unbiased mod--sorry.
