Modem making grinding noise every few minutes

For the last hour or so, the modem on this computer has been making a grinding noise, as if it is trying to connect, when it's connected already at 45000 kbps.

I'm using Compuserve dialup with a Lucent Win modem on an almost year-and a half old HP Pavilion 7965 PC.

I'm running Compuserve, Windows Media Player, and Internet Explorer.

Does anyone know what can be causing this problem?

You say it's grinding like when it tries connecting? Do you mean the telephony noise meaning it has established a connection? or like an actual physical grinding sound?

The telephony noise.

Is your speaker volume on the modem turned up? Check your volume control.

Very strange.. the modem speaker should be muted when it's connected...

If you really wanna mess with it, when things like that go on, I restart. If that doesn't do it, take the modem out (with the computer off ), dust it off and everything, stick it back in, and see what happens.

Yeah. Sounds really genius-like, doesn't it I have no idea what would be causing it to beep and such
