ok, I don't want to start a huge argument but my personal feeling on this is no don't do it. I personally don't believe in dressing babies and children up to look like little adults, and really can a child truly tell a parent that they don't like something and be taken seriously? I mean if it's something you do then thats your decision, but me personally I just think it's a bad idea...besides the last thing I'd want to teach my child at such a young and impressionable age is that looks are the most important thing in life.

This is something hubby and I have talked about . . . and we've decided that modeling (esp. for young children) puts the focus on all the wrong things (appearances) and could keep them from having a "normal child" life.

One reason to consider such a thing, imo, would be:
1. It's done as an infant, so the child doesn't learn negative messages.
2. The money is put in a college fund for the child. Maybe one of those special accounts that can only be used for tertiary education or something?

That's not to say another family wouldn't make a different choice, but that's the choice we've made :)

My two cents: sure, why not. If you constantly touch in with your daughter to make sure she is not suffering because of it, she is still living a full life outside of modeling, she finds it fun and seems to enjoy it, etc. Also, well this should be first, seek God in prayer to be certain that this is in His will for your daughter at this age and/or ask Him how to go about it in a spiritually wise way.

personally, it makes us very uncomfortable to use our children and profit from them like that. (disclaimer - just our opinion!) Our children are people, not little toys for me to dress up, show off and make money from. So, it's a no from us here.

I'd hope any sane parent wouldn't profit from their child's work! All the parents I know who have allowed this have put all money earned in his/her child's savings account, college fund, etc. so that the child profits from his/her work. :)

I have to say I like to dress up every now & then so I dress my daughter up as well.

Ok. I didn't have time to respond earlier - I was running out.

Catalog/clothing modeling I'm ok.

Pageant - Freaky full make-up adult girls - I'm not ok with :p

Our friends had their daughter in advertisement modeling (she also did some for Parenting magazine etc) and it was fun for them. We almost had our oldest son but the amount of time and traveling (to SF) wasn't worth it for us.

If we did participate and put the kiddo's in - any $ they made would go in their acct.

I'd say that it's up to you! I personally feel that my baby could be the next Gerber baby, but I might be just a smidgin biased :). We're not dress up folk, so I wouldn't do it...just not a me thing. If you want to do it, I'd say go for it. Just make sure you completely understand the contract.

Actually, I have considered getting him into it [catalog modeling] but lemme tell you, he'd be the most high maintenance child model ever! He'd throw Naomi Campbell out the box hahaha. So for him, it would be an unhealthy activity to introduce in his childhood.

Though, I have never heard of pageant modeling for young boys. That's a new one to me.
