Back to your original question... you might need more information than the links posted earlier, so I will continue.

Missionary-hopefuls connect with a mission board, which is often connected with their denomination, or an organization they respect. Since mission work promotes doctrine, you'll want to make sure you agree with the doctrine they'll help you spread.

The mission board will have guidelines for preparation: Letters of recommendation from your pastor and coworkers or peers. A lot of language training. Courses in mission work. Sometimes practice sessions within your country.

Then you will need to raise funds. Setting up appointments with churches is not an easy task for people who just want to get out there and start working. You will need a guaranteed commitment of a certain percentage of your costs, and a downpayment up front. That might seem unreasonable, but it's better than being stuck in a foreign land with no one to help you, when people back home have forgotten who you are.

And then after you have done all that, the board might ask you to live in the country for a year without doing any discipleship or evangelism, so you are not treated like an outsider trying to change everyone.

And then the mission work begins.

It's such an investment of time... be open to other ways God might want to use you.
Some people take a simpler route, of taking a job teaching English in a foreign country. Then they have friendships, steady income, and enter others' territory on a different premise.

Also there are organizations like Samaritan's Purse, which do shorter-term mission work. They seem to be adding staff these days.

It's alot of work. People should make spreading the gospel easy, not hard.

I've been thinking more about this. Be you and tell the truth is another way of preaching the gospel.
I'm very observant, so solving problems is a big thing with me. I'm good at breaking things down and finding solutions. If I just travelled around the world doing that, imagine the difference I could make.
Trying to be something to impress others is like carrying a picture of a paper God.
Who are you?

Also - telling the truth isn't necessarily going to make you loved wherever you go. I view international 'mission' work, as being a visitor. A guest is careful not to make themselves unwelcome - there are rules so that the encounter is pleasant for both parties.
A guest leaves. I think that's the heart of true 'mission' work. Unless you're invading, you're a guest. Give love and it will return to you. He's 'our' father in heaven, that never changes.

People...that can be you.

Good advice.

And that's one big reason people above encouraged you to keep it local -- there's so much that can be done around you, that you might be more effective where you're not perceived as an outsider.

Some people feel more comfortable going where others don't already have expectations of them... but that could just be a slight switch in venues. A different church, different school, different restaurant...wherever you feel you're effective.
