  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am wondering about mission work opportunities... I love to travel, however I do not have money to go anywhere, or live being a missionary. Are there any ministries that fund or support you while you work? I've looked into a lot of places, including YWAM, but they all require you to raise thousands of dollars. I am a senior in college, and don't have the funds to support myself.

I don't really feel comfortable asking for money.

Does anybody know of any opportunities in the Caribbean, like Jamaica, or New Zealand?

Many Christians when they first start considering missions work believe that there must be "paid positions". The idea seems logical because - after all - if we are willing to donate our own time ... then shouldn't someone else pick up the expenses?

But no - it does not work that way. There is no "great benefactor" who mysteriously hands out money for missions. And therefore if you'd like to do a trip - then you will need to raise the money to do it. Typically this might require you to raise several thousand dollars ... it all depends on where you are going and for how long. Generally the money raising part of the activity is the biggest hurdle - and can be a real challenge. It really helps if you have good support from your own church, and encouragement from friends and family. The process will take time and a lot of commitment. But it is a worthwhile activity in itself.

Over a number of years i have watched many Christian team members raise money to go on trips. They succeed, or fail, in a number of ways. I usually give them tremendous amounts of encouragement, suggest what kinds of ideas work and what don't, and pray for them a lot. It has been my observation (as team leader) that this process is really a good sorting out system. It will sort out the team members into two groups ... those who are truly dedicated to their mission (very committed) ... and those for whom the trip was "sort of a good idea - maybe". The latter folks often fail or give up - usually in the early stages of the process. I have come to realize that the fundraising activity is a powerful lesson in teaching us to be humble and to really improve our faith in God. If you truly want to go - you need to develop focus ... mentally, physically and spiritually. Like it or not - this is an obstacle that you must climb over - with God's help!

It might be possible for you to find a job with a Christian organization. That could work, and you can look around. But the vast majority of Christian missions projects require fundraising as you have described.

The ball is really in your court.
How committed are you to truly being out there in the missions field?
How much are you willing to pray?
How hard are you willing to try?
How much are you willing to stretch yourself?

These are important questions for you to ponder.

best wishes,

If you are looking at a short term mission. Then I would suggest getting others in your church motivated and put together a team. When you are sharing the costs it gets cheaper. My family and I are going with a team to Mexico this summer. We are looking at about $600.00 per person for travel, food/lodging for 2 weeks. Then as a team we are raising $3,000.00 for a building project. That money is raised through fundraisers and is not that difficult to reach if you start early.
We stay with a mission group while in mexico and the Cost is $13.00/day for a bed and breakfast and lunch. Thats a good value for the money.

If you are looking at long term missions work. Then you will have to ask for money. It's called deputation. You will need to visit with several churches and tell them what mission field you are looking at, and then ask them to support you.

God Bless,
Scott

Wow.. i would LOVE mission work in ANY of these tropical paradises too lol.

If you want to mission.. try mission on your doorstep. You neighbours, family, the guy at the corner shop.. your friends.

We are spiritual children and g-d wants us to multiply. He commands it.

Talk about Yeshua. Boost in him and be prideful in him.

Most of all... you can 'mission' through being in christ. Be like him. Turn the other cheek. Offer help when none is asked for. Show the fire and light of G-d in everything you do.

Pray for mission and your father will show you where you are needed.
