Jacob (Isarel) adopted his grandsons through Joseph , Eph, and Man. [and Joseph continued to have other offspring] so there are 14 tribes in Israel.
Only 12 are mentioned in Revelation in the selection of 12,000 from each for the elect, the chosen.
Why are Ephraim and Dan EXCLUDED?

Not necessarily an answer, but something to chew on

there is a theory in theology today that from Dan's offspring would come the antichrist

"Dan shall be a serpent by the way, a viper by the path, that bites teh horse's heels so that its rider shall fall backward."

but then again, there really isn't that huge of evidence to convince, only the fact that Dan is omitted in the Revelation. Also, Ephraim are mentioned numerous times in Hosea as being adulterous, much more than the other tribes. Once again, it could be...good question

be blessed

Each tribe (and apostle) represents a character/personality type for all who profess service to God. The fact that Dan and Ephraim are missing in Revelation leads me to believe those who share their character will not be going through the gates...

Rev 21:12
And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
21.13
On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
21.14
And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
21.21
And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
21.23
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
21.25
And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
21.27
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Joseph was not one of the orignal 12 tribes. Reuben lost the right of the first born ( a double portion of the inheirtance) because he slept with Isreal's concubine. So Isreal granted the double portion to Joseph.
Joseph's portion was divided between his two sons,
Ephraim and Manasseh. Ephraim and Manasseh were two tribes amongst the 12. Only in revelation was a tribe of joseph mentioned. So Joseph could be Ephraim (mere speculation on my part).

How can there have been twelve original tribes without Joseph?

The losing of birthright has nothing to do with being a son and qualifying as a tribe, Reuben is still a tribe in Revelation.

Joseph had more offspring after E. and M. and so continued as a separate though small tribe.
