Miss. prom canceled after lesbian's date request - USATODAY.com

Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year," school board members said in a statement.
Maybe schools should ask local businesses to support and organize the proms.
Politics gets in the way of education, the people in charge of education have to drop the problem, in this case, the Prom.

Why does the school ask about the persons date?
My daughter went to homecoming last month, I looked at others pictures,
there was twins pictured together, two or more girls together, I believe even 2 guys were together. I don't believe any of these kids to be gay, but I bet they might have ridden to the dance with the same sex person.
Is it so wrong for a girl to want to wear a tux? If you look at formal dresses, they tend to display the woman in one light, glamor and sexy.
Tuxedos do not highlight skin, and would be more conservative for a modest girl.
Couples tickets are usually cheaper than two single tickets, so buying them together is more econmoical.
So looking at these issues, why does the school need to know who is who's date? If they don't know officially, they can't be accused of endorsing or descriminating against homosexuals.
The complainers would have no basis for complaint. They still would, but the school could claim ignorance.
For the people supporting homosexuality, taking on a school is not the place for a battle. Schools all over the country are barely making it, taking a school to court over dropping the prom because of protest would burn more money that schools don't have. If they refused to admit this couple, I would see a reason to fight.
Of course, there may be a bullying suit to follow since the whole school will miss prom, because of this one couple.(not everyone will look at this fairly.)
I can see not allowing a male to dress in a formal dress, as it would disrupt the dance, but when the couple is being reasonable, they should be allowed.

Wow. Not only did they present the hissy fit, "well if you're gonna push it we're just gonna quit" method, but they just made that poor girl a lot of enemies.

It's pathetic that people like that are in charge of education.

Got to say, I'm amazed at how badly the school has been acting in this case.

I can't see where any logic in dictating what someone can or can't wear to the event, especially since I doubt they have a school uniform for the rest of the year. As to the who you can and can't take to the dance.. what ever happened to land of the free?

Eitherway, feel sorry for the girl, since she's going to end up on the receiving end of most of the blame.

Heh - all the senior girls on the softball team wore tuxes to our prom.
like I said, the formal dresses might not be a girls idea of nice looking. I bet every year girls dress in suits, rather than the traditional formal.

In defense of the school, they probably knew their parents and outspoken people in the community, and just nipped the problem in the bud.
That is why I offered what I did. Take the school out of who is dating whom(who?), and allow formal suits to be worn by females.(I would offer mandating the formal dress could sexual harrassment.)
If the school doesn't ask, the students don't have to tell. The school can wash thier hands about a gay couple going to prom. The students might be warned that if they broadcast their attending this might happen.

If a school dance detracts from learning, it has to be dropped, As any school function. Kids learning is precidence.

This girl is definately feeling the preasure.

At a time when our government is discussing removing the DADT from the military, I don't know if it's a good thing for us to advocate that schools pick it up.

I applaud the moral stance this school is taking. Inevitably though, public schools will be forced to indoctrinate their students with curriculum that reflects the morals and values of American secular society.

If a Christian school wants to maintain its moral standards, it's going to have to go private.

Meanwhile, this graduating class will likely have their prom in a hall or a barn somewhere. Whether the lesbian couple shows up or not will depend on the graduating class. My guess is that they will be accepted.

...

...?

First, I also really don't see why the school is asking who's dating who.

Second... why is it a problem if the girl (kinda cute btw) brings another girl?

Are there actually parents/students that think "oh no, some girl is bringing another girl to the prom! This is an outrage! Should be forbidden!"?

Like...

?!

I don't think it's a matter of who you are 'dating' but who is your 'date'. In the case of the prom, many schools require fore-knowledge of who you are bringing, for safety. When I went to prom it was a school policy that your date had to be someone 'high school age' ie they went to our highshool, or could prove they went to one of the sorrounding high schools. I think it was a policy to prevent grown-ups from crashing the prom and spiking the punch and causing other incidents.

But I agree, as long as there is no safety conflict, there's no reason to prevent girl/girl guy/guy dates in a public school.

Which is pretty funny considering that at the five or so proms I attended, the person who spiked the punch (or attempted to) was a kid from our high school.

But yeah, our policy was that your date had to be under the age of 21. Nothing about it being opposite sex...

I guess the main issue now is that it's been in their rules and it is still a rule so it needs to be followed, until it's changed. Perhaps this case will be the impetus that forces the change.

That wasn't the case in our high school. There had been issues with non-high schooolers before.

oh I'm sure it's different for all schools. I went to a big inner city public high school where my graduating class was like 500 students. There's bound to be some troublemakers in a class that big!! ^_^

I was not one of them. I was the principal's pet.

In all honesty, most people are perfectly fine with DA, it is DT that gets them. Should businesses ask if you are married, if you are planning to have kids, ect.? No.

Should you be fired if you happen to mention it to a coworker? No.

The schools don't ask, but if the students want to, they can tell.

Because High school students would totally never do that.

I think it is to keep away the 24 year old dating a 17 year old senior, because that tends to make people feel very uncomfortable. Kinda like when two guys/gals are dating.

I think it isn't.

I should have stated that is one of the reasons.

Really, any other reason (drugs, alcohol, violence) would be as much a threat allowing those under 21 in as those above, at least when I first think about it. Of course, those who do not attend the school who are not a date of someone who does should not be allowed in, as it is a school function.
