  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think you're thinking of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. On that day, the Jewish high priest would send the scapegoat into the desert as part of the atonement ritual. Attached to it was a red thread, which turned white, indicating God had forgiven their sins for the year. Since the goat was out in the desert, half the thread was on the goat and half was tied to the temple door. According to the Talmud, after the Crucifixion, the thread no longer turned white.

Quite interesting. Can you please quote a reference?

Thanks

I found this online - It's an interesting website, not had enough time to fully read it, but here's the link and the piece of relevance:

http://www.terryhall.org/articles/yom%20kippur.htm

In the ancient temple days God gave a sign by the scarlet thread turning white symbolizing He accepted their Yom Kippur sacrifices; is this seen with Jesus? Absolutely, according to John 19:33-34, after Jesus had died a soldier pierced His side, which poured out blood then water (scarlet turned to white.) It was also around this time in Jewish history that some rather bizarre events transpired as noted by Jewish historians. The Babylonian Talmud (Rabbinic Judaism commentary) states:
"Our Rabbis taught: During the last forty years before the destruction of the Temple ... the scarlet thread did not become white, nor did the western lamp shine; and the doors of the Holy of Holies would fling themselves open of their own accord..."
We know the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, so forty years prior would be precisely the time that our Redeemer offered Himself as the Supreme Atoning Sacrifice. No, the scarlet thread on the Temple would no longer turn white, the candlestick that was closest to the Ark of the Covenant, that always stayed lit because of the presence of God, refused to burn, the doors of the Holy of Holies in which the presence of God dwelt above the Mercy Seat on the Ark flung themselves open. Why? Because the Glory of God had departed the Temple, no longer would God dwell in a man made temple, rather He dwells in you and me; and no longer would animal sacrifices for sins be accepted. Only through the blood of Jesus are we atoned for.

Peace in Christ!

Wow! Is this verified by any other sources? I'm just playing the devils advocate just in case there are any non-believers reading this thread.

Personally, I believe in miracles as I have witnessed so many myself.

Lovingly in Christ,
Elizabeth

Merry Christmas to all.

Hey there!

Ya know, I'm not sure. However, I started this as a result of the reference being made by someone here, helping a fellow "OBOBber" in an Apologetic debate with a Jewish person. I only had a fleeting look at the thread last time, but it stuck in my head for a while and came up to the surface today...It does seem to hold trutch, only I think that the Jewish community subscribed the lack of miracle to other sources.

Interesting, eh?

Peace in Christ and Merry Christ's-Birthday to you too! :)

Thanks! I was also thinking about that as I responded to two different topics in one Thread! God bless the MODS! :D

But, yeah, if there are any folk that have more on the miracle no longer happened after Jesus' Sacrifice, please feel free to post here. I love reading "Jesus Proofs" like that!

The other two (the candle that does not want to light and the doors that open) are equally fascinating.

Thanks and Peace in Christ!

To get back on subject,

What other miracles are associated with Christ's Passion, Death and Resurrection that are reflected in Jewish writings?

Was the torn temple cloth and the earthquake which occurred at Christ's death recorded by Jewish writers?

I have heard of this sort of thing in 1st century Jewish reports. There are a few of them. Most Jewish writers do ascribe the cause of these 'manifestations of God's displeasure' to other things, e.g. the corruption of the Temple priesthood. They are seen as warnings and harbingers of the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D.

There was another thread on this a while back which mentioned the passages from various editions of the Talmud. It's not something I've read personally - I first heard about it on a Catholic radio show and then I saw the thread here. I think it's interesting, but I don't know if it's true or not (but I'm guessing it is). A web search will turn up a bunch of pages with this story, but they're web pages. If someone more familiar with this could post a reference, that would be great.
