  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why are you getting a laptop? For gaming, PCs are better and cheaper. 1, because the components are generally cheaper, and 2 because it is much easier to find component to build your own pc (which reduces the cost significantly) than a laptop.

And how much are you willing to spend? You can get a good gaming pc for as little as 700 or a top-of-the-line one for 2K.

I agree . For gaming it's best get a desktop since high-end processors (3gh+) which more games recommend (not required yet) will uses up laptops battery life. So most laptops are usually has slower porcessors to have longer battery life since it used more for business. So I would recommend you get atleast 3Gh+ processor. (P.S then again it according what kind of game you like to play. Strategys =2gh would do fine while simulation and FPS =3+gh is highly recommended)

I wouldn't recommend one of these "3+ GHz processors" you speak of. I'd say definitely go with an AMD Athlon 64 system.

Agreed! More expensive, but worth it in the long run, imo. And if money is not a problem for you, go SLI. You can't beat dual PCI-E Video cards. And if both money and time are not problems, then wait a couple months for ATI multi-rendering. In my experience, the top end ATI products tend to be better than nVidea, at least in graphics cards. ATI multirendering is basically ati's version of sli, except you can have up to four graphics cards working simulatneously, plus, it sounds like the system for how the rendering is managed between the cards will work better than sli's method. Not necessarily a fact, just my opinion from what I have read.

obviously some have a lot of cash to put into a PC. I usually buy med-range (1,000 -1,200) which work fine for around 2-3 years instead spending 3,000 for top-end. Yes I only get 30 fps now (with 2gh) instead of 60 fps yet i watch TV for years which only had 30 FPS and didn't bother me a bit. Most games will work fine on med-range pc since most games are design for that range. so 3Gh+ is the minimum I would go yet if you got that kind of money then obviously you should buy the best and most expensive or just wait in 2-3 months because something always come out faster and better. Of course 2-3 months later someone will recommended you wait 2-3 months longer because something else will come out better. This will be even more true when the new consoles start coming out next year. watch both Sony and Microsoft come out with amazing system with less cost. I wouldn't be surprise they will be better in graphics than PC at first.

If you have lots of money, one word: Alienware. hehe. Emphasis on "lots". Though, like everyone else, I would recommend going with a PC. Unless you are a gaming junkie traveling business man, a laptop solely for gaming doesn't make much sense. (And even then, all ya need is a big backpack and a power strip... ;))

I may find myself moving around a lot in the near future, so a laptop is pretty much required .I can always plug it in, most of the time so battery shouldn't be a big problem. If I'm not near a plug, I'll be driving anyway, its just the moblity I need. I've looked at places like dell and at specs for recent games, the level of gaming I'm doing should be ok on a laptop. I'm on a budget of £1000 - £1500.

Do not go with dell. They are overpriced and not very high quality, especially for gaming. My suggetion would be if you aren't willing to try custom building a laptop (which would probably be difficult), go with an alienware. I don't have any personal experience w/ them, but they certainly cant be worse than a dell. Also, be careful. Do not buy anything with an integrated graphics card. They are nowhere near as good as a real graphics card.

There are some pretty heavy-duty DTR laptops available. You said battery life is not important, but is weight? Some of these monsters weigh upwards of 10 lbs., which can get very burdensome if you're planning on carrying it around a lot. I myself am waiting on AMD's 64-bit low voltage "Turion" to appear in laptops in the next few months. Now that PCI-e is mainstream in notebooks, good graphics performance is much more a reality.
