  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm filling out a questionaire for my church on views/ideas for faith formation and the priest shortage. I've realized that I've got lots of ideas. Then I realized that it isn't the first time I've heard this "voice" telling me to go with these ideas.

SOOOO, I was wondering what lay ministries are out there that deal with faith formation and youth ministry?
What can I do as a learning catholic to help others?

I would say the first thing would be to get involved directly with your Parish. Talk with your Priest and find out what you could do to help, find out what areas are lacking outside of Mass, ie Bible studies, youth groups, retreats, what various catholic womens organizations are in your area. I think this would be a great start for you.

WOW! Where to start? Priest shortage is a big one, but the reason is even bigger.

Then there is lack of Catholic Teaching and teaching of faith and morals, lack of Bible Study, lack of youth groups, lack of youth, discipleship training, lack of fellowship, lack of the Worship and arts, lack of Lay ministry equiping.

Discipleship training is one of the biggest subjects I think, but you would have to have a good qualified person for that position...

I agree! I want to help in my church but before I approach I'd like more information on forming a ministry in my church or even ideas others have had.

One thing that would help me attend a bible study or other church functions would be childcare. At my daughters school (preschool in a Baptist church) they provide childcare for all church functions. I've attended several parenting classes and youth groups meeting and the people of the church watched my children! It is an inspriation to watch the fellowship in thier church.

Don't even get me started on there youth group! WOW!
Or the church start with parenting classes for christian parents! I learned a lot from the sessions at the Baptist school. (my children are getting tired of hearing me quote scripture when I give them the MORAL reason why we don't hit or the MORAL reason why we do share and think of others!) Anyway, I could go on and on and I just want to share and get the catholic church moving on fellowship. I want to help others see the love of Jesus in each other! I don't want to run the ministry, just want to help! Maybe just share new ideas!

Sorry for going on, but I can't help it. It is almost becoming a passion for me.

OK, CM.

Do you have the energy to organise a Youth Group or a Bible Study?

These are both very important. Every parish needs them.

CCD, RCIA and Confirmation preparation are also very important.

Where are your strengths? Talents? Skills? Experience?

Good questions. I was very involved in college with our youth group and did lots of organizing for it. As far as my strengths, talents, and skills, I'm going to be thinking about them and making a list.:) As far as time and energy, I'm a mom with 2 that will both be in school full-time soon. I've been looking for something to fill my time.... that's why I'm exploring this.
