  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Um, wow. This is one impressive board you've got here. Quite overwhelming, really...

For those who don't know me from Cross+Flame (where I'm 'Ganesh'), a brief introduction. I'm 34 years of age, male, and a psychiatric doctor by profession, living and working in London (although I'm Scottish and have previously lived in Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh).

I'm gay, and have been with my partner for over seven years now (still no 'itch'); our union has spawned two small black cats and a succession of ailing houseplants.

On the vexed question of 'faith', I've never been quite sure how to describe myself: although a 'scientific humanist' by nature and perhaps overly sceptical (so I've been told), I'm extremely interested in world religions and have a tendency to 'pick & mix' elements of Christianity (particularly Jesus and the New Testament), Hindu, Buddhism and wishy-washy, vaguely New Age 'karma'. I call the result 'fuzzy agnosticism' - I don't believe the existence or non-existence of a Godhead can be proved (yet) but I have an inchoate belief in something, and prefer to keep all avenues open and all possibilities... erm, possible.

Glad to be here!

Ganapati -- you're "fuzzy agnosticism' is interesting. I think a lot of people are that way, but I don't know. The main thing today is "tolerance" but Christ does not want people who "tolerate" he wants people who will follow him.
That's a perfectly valid opinion. Not being Christian myself, I guess it's of limited immediate relevance to me, though.

Thanks to you, and others, for the welcome.
