Is it just me or has TV just become mind numbingly stupid? You can't go to any channel without seeing some new idiotic reality show, a new TV show that is basically the same as the last, but with a few changes. Movies have become so predictable its boring. Very little meaningful stuff is in the news, they simply like to show you the worst parts of things, or what is in the governments best interest (news being unbiased is a lie; have you ever heard of a positive drug story in the news? funny because all my experiences have been really positive) How can you people stand to have this mindless **** shoved down your throats? Does it bother you that instead of doing something meaningful (getting involved politically, doing something creative like playing the guitar), you are watching imaginary people living out fake lives?

I realize of course that most of you do other things besides watch TV, but I just can't seem to stand any TV, just wondering how any of you can...

Yes, I do agree with you. A great deal of tv is stupid but I have a bad habit of keeping the thing on all the time. I think it comes from living alone and just needing the sound to drown out the quiet that comes from it.

I do other things such as my job, running (I'm training for a half marathon in Nov.), reading and hanging with my friends and family and doing church related stuff but its nice sometimes to know that I can turn on my background noise when I get home. :)

I used to watch a lot and lot of TV when i was around 16, 17. All useless things. lol But i dont even watch TV for 30 mins in total everyday now. But on the other hand my little bro is so glued to the TV but the good thing is, I've never seen him watch any useless stuff, ALl he watches is Discovery channel, Science channels, Animal Planet and History channels. So i think its not the TV but its our own decision. We should learn to sepetate the good from bad.

P.S My bro is not a 8 or 9 year old. LOL he is 16 so you know.

I agree with you on the reality show thing---I mean, when it comes to people swapping wives I think it's gone too far. And not even shows that do stupid stuff like that... a lot of reality tv has just become unbearable.

I keep the tv on a ton, because I'm 17 and I live on a mountain, and I'm home alone a lot of the time, and if I don't keep the noise in the background I freak out at every little noise and think someone's breaking in.

And to be completely honest, I think tv fills a void for some people. You know, society has become this big slump where we never discuss anything not of immediate importance anymore, and I think that people turn to the tv to hear actual conversation. Sure, the person watching tv cannot participate in the conversation, but at least they can hear it. And, you know, scripts come from somewhere, and believe it or not, you can actually gain a lot of insight on topics that the people you know will not discuss, and you can see other peoples' point of view... even if they are just characters.

So, while I think a lot of tv can be bad, a little won't hurt, and if you can actually get out and do something more worthwhile, I say go for it. But in my case, where I don't have a car and can't get off this mountain, there isn't a ton to do. Besides running, dancing, reading, and I do a lot of grassroots activism for some groups.... but sometimes it does get a little crazy up here when you don't talk to people all day then when someone does get home, convo is as simple as "where's the cat" and "what are we having for dinner".

Yeah Tv has gotten really bad. Just look at the rise and fall of the Simpsons. It uses to be a great comedy, not it is just absurdist junk. And then there's the fall of cartoons in general, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner and Tom and Jerry cartoons, the old Warner Brothers cartoons in general were comedy gold and enjoyed by people of all ages and often had a perfect blend of slap-stick and intelligent humor.

Now they have absurdist junk like spongebob squarepants, I don't know what kind of psychological problems you have to have to enjoy that bizarre show. Family Guy is only funny becasue of the dog and the baby, the other charecters and humor are just terrible. The simpsons should have been cancelled around 1997. Futurama was probably the last good cartoon.

And I think it is not just Tv but popular culture in genral that has been going down hill recently. I think it all started when the rise of Grunge in the early 90's dealt a near mortal blow to music and then Rap/Hip-hop finished it off around 94-95. If you had watched Mtv around that time it became almost identical to BET, and now they don't even play videos. There isn't any good music out today is there? All the new junk I've heard just sounds like over-polished Grunge.

And movies, about all they have now are bad re-makes and really, really, lame plots and stupid comedies.

So the junk on Tv is just one of the many symptoms of the present cultural decline.

There are good shows on (in re-runs) , but they are usually on at like 2 am like Quantum Leap on the SciFi channel or in the middle of the day like Warner Brothers cartoons and I can't watch them becasue of school.

Just found a statistic I'd like to post...

The average american watches 6 1/2 hours of TV a day :|

Simply amazing. Six and a half hours?! Of course once again I am not saying all of you are the average american, but if you are, good lord man, that's the most pitiful thing ever...

Well, does the tv in the background count as watching it? I don't really watch it but I like the background noise. I think they're looking at my satellite bill and noticing I'm throwing off the entire ratings system... because between me having it on in the daytime, and my sibs having it on at night (they work funky hours), it probably shows us watching 23 hours of tv a day!

I agree completely!

most tv is either so stupid, obvious, or offensive its agrivating!

My fave shows are like americain justice, investigative reports city confidential, biography (in some cases), cold case files. Joan of Arcadia, 20/20, Dateline, and I like some cartoons shows meant for adults like the simpsons.

I do know the shows are about true life crime (bad stuff):o but i am facinated by the investigative process and forensic investigations. How something so small can link someone to a crime.

I think in missed my calling in all honesty lol:D

There's no more good sitcoms (okay, maybe a few). The heirs to great shows like Sienfeld and Home Improvment have died out to the stupidity of Reality-tv, which, IMO, has been completely over-used and have produced some of the worst tv in small-screen history.

TV, unfortunatly , reflects those who watch it. Morons watch the garbage we are stuck with in great numbers, so we are stuck with it. If a good series is aired, it will be over most peoples heads and it will not survive.

I can't believe anyone could watch 6 1/2 hours of tv a day. Where do they find the time? I couldn't stand to watch that much of it in a week.
What we do watch is usually old movies or some educational stuff for the girls.
It really is basically a bunch of uh, crud,(yeah that's the word), on tv anymore.
