I would bet that Trump told the hold-outs that should Johnson do the same old waffling against Democrats as did Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy that Trump would support a new Speaker. Not letting the Democrats bog down the plan to make America great again is the number one priority.

I don't know that I would say it went smoothly. He did get elected on the first ballot, but only because several people changed their votes before it was officially closed. There's usually no question who the SPeaker is going to be at the start of a new Congress.
