  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Got to see Michael Mann talk this past week. VERY interesting. Good speaker. He was talking about "The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars".

It's refreshing to step away from anti-science places like CF once in a while to get grounded in reality for a change.

My one suggestion to the scientific know-nothing that about on CF: go read some real science or go watch some real scientists talk. Get your head out of the denialist blogger behinds.

Who's Michael Mann and why should we take him seriously? I mean, some good speakers are very crazy, but good orators; while some people who are geniuses struggle to put two words together in front of an audience.

Who's Michael Mann, anyway?

Thanks. You do realise that most people in the world don't live in the US and also that most climate scientists don't live in the US and also wouldn't have a clue who Michael Mann is?

After your link, it seems as if he's just one of tens of thousands of scientists from all over the world with similar qualifications. Why is he special?

Because he's a good speaker?

He's sort of a big deal. He's like the Wakefield of climatology, if Wakefield actually was right instead of a hack. That's the kind of hate he's gotten for his research. Of course, the distinction is there - his research was groundbreaking, and also held up to criticism and repetition. So yeah. This guy's kind of a focal point of the scientific part of the climate science war, as well as an excellent scientist and pretty great speaker. He's the kind of guy you might have heard of. ;) Surprised so many people haven't.

Have you read Wahl-Ammann (2007)? Or Briffa et. al. (2001)? Or any number of the other studies that have since vindicated, through concordant data from independent methodology, Mann's original hypothesis?

Mann has had a significant impact on climate research, but you know what? If we remove his study, guess what: the hockey stick is still there.

He is just well know here in the US on this issue for standing up to the political nonsense here in the US. I'd assume that he is less well known outside of the US, but he's kinda my personal hero. :) His work is well worth listening to IMO. He's a good and convincing speaker on this topic. I'm sure there are other good speakers in Europe and around the world, but he is one of my favorites.

STOP THAT RIGHT NOW.. and be quiet.
If you get a bunch of religious people to think rationally, where will I go for my entertainment? ^_^

That's what bothers me. Kent Hovind is a good speaker, too. On what he perceives as science. He's quite convincing to laymen. But on anything even related to science he's quite, how shall I put it, on par with first year at pre-school 'scientists'.

But, it seems as if this guy is the real deal and also an excellent climate scientist. And a good speaker. Not two attributes found together often.

That's not really a fair comparison. Michael Mann presents his case scientifically, and unlike Kent's claims, his claims don't fall apart the moment you look into them. :)

What's interesting to me is that he understands a lot of the politics and he's felt their wrath. He explains that process and he's an articulate speaker. As I said, I'm sure that there are other good speakers on this topic, I just happen to like his presentations.

If human caused climate change is settled science why do we constantly revisit the science?
Because not all of it is settled. It's pretty well-established that CO2 is a major driver of global climate. What's not quite as clear are the precise details of how the next hundred or so years of CO2-induced warming are likely to play out.

The larger problem is, and will continue to be, the gridlock in Congress over what to do (here) about it.
