My favorite album is Ride the Lightning, then Master of Puppets. I know what you guys mean about some new Metallica. St. Anger was awful (along with most of Load and Reload, excluding Hero of the Day). I too prefer Metallica in the 80's. Good to know other people like Metallica!

I guess metallica's alright, they have few songs that appeal to me, namely Welcome Home (sanitarium) and For Whom the Bell Tolls. But for a band with 'metal' in their name, i don't like them a whole lot.
admittedly, the guitarists were quite awsome in their prime.

Absolutely adore "the black album", in particular. Had a very surreal moment 9 years ago, when I was headhunted by a big London booking agency. Got dragged in for an interview, which was held in the big guys fancy office. Found myself sitting under a signed photo & platinum disk, with the inscription - "To John Jackson, for helping make "Metallica" one of the biggest selling albums of 1992". I was SO awestruck!

Master of Puppets is terrific. But after St. Anger, I feel guilty even talking about Metallica. I mean, I can't imagine them being in the studio and thinking, "Hey, this album is great." Ugh. I think the production on St. Anger was the worst part.

I actually watched their documentary. It was appalling watching James lay down vocals for some of those songs, and the guys being like, 'oh yeah, that's it. that's a hot track.' Laughable. Those are some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard.

"My lifestyle determines my death style"??? C'mon. What garbage......

I agree with Sava. I loved Metallica before they sold out. I still listen to some of the old stuff from Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.

Yep. I was more into Metallica and that style in general right before St. Anger came out. I remember how excited everyone was about a new Metallica album. I remember the radio DJs saying how hot the new single was a few days before it came out. I remember hearing the song "St. Anger" for the first time and being speechless. I doubt I will ever forget the lines "Feel the ground shake like an earthquake" and "I'm madly in anger with you." I also remember being disgusted with radio stations when they tried to hang on to playing the song for the first couple of weeks. What a bummer. This post also just reminded me of how disappointed I am/was with Velvet Revolver. Sad times. :(
