  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

best book ever! i'm not done reading it but it's amazing! c.s. lewis was truly a man of God.

Agreed! I first read this a few months ago, and I have read it all the way through four more times since, and certain sections even more! I was a big fan of CS Lewis beforehand, and this just increases my admiration for his work. The book is basically an appology for and an explanation of the Christian Faith and it is really quite astonishing in places - the way he describes, explains and illustrates things rings so true. I would recomend it to anyone in the strongest possible terms :)

I've always meant to read something from C.S. Lewis, probably the Cronicles of Narnia, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. There's alot I've got to get around to reading,, I loved the movie "To Kill a Mokingbird", and I would probably love the book as well, but I tend not to want to read books that I already know the ending to. My sister read the entire Lord Of the Rings series, and loved them. They seem to be too long for the type of book that they are (I'm not too interested in fantasy novels, with the exception of Harry Potter, if you can even count that), but I've heard that the Narnia books are quite similar, seeing as Tolkin and Lewis were good friends, and since they're much shorter I think I'd rather read those first. I've never heard of "Mere Christianity", but it sounds like it might be worth a read.

Mere Christianity is a must read. If you want more C.S.Lewis I cannot recommend 'The Screwtape Letters' highly enough. It is a short 160 pages, and an absolutely razor sharp delight. Such works deserve to be called classics and deserve to be read much more widely than they are.

ditto.
however i'm not finished Mere Christianity yet. I have like one more chapter to go. i just am a person who is so inconsistent. just reading one book, then a different mood comes on me another day and i start reading another book... just like me doing some creative writing on my own- i start one story, get two pages done, then start a new one w/a new thought.
:sigh:
but i've just started reading Screwtape Letters. very good. but then i bought Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and couldn't resist reading that incredibly funny story.

and to delay the process of me finishing Mere Christianity, there's homework and exams and the fact that reading from the perspective of a Christian man then reading the perspective of a demon is quite confusing my brain. ;)

This was probably the first book that I read of C.S. Lewis' after years of watching the Chronicles of Narnia films, and the animated Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. It's also gotta be one of the best books I've ever read. It's well written, easy to read, and easy to understand.
