I liked it, but I think that Chesterton's Orthodoxy is better, although its also somewhat philosophical and not a light read.

 .. Orthodoxy... it's not everyday that someone even has heard of Chesterton. I would agree an excellent book along with Mere Christianity. The reasoning that Lewis provides is incredible. His aguments are so well thought out... just reading it you have to go back to make sure your following the argument. It's great though. Books like this make you comprehend literature better...

I really feel blessed after having read "Mere Christianity" many years ago. Like Lewis, I was the ultimate skeptic, finding fault in Christian doctrine and considering it to be wishful thinking. Through all the trials and tribulations of life, I keep coming back to this work, and it is a real factor in my faith.
Well you wont get a better testimony than that! I have enjoyed many of the CS Lewis' books. I was brought up on the Narnia chronicles and would recommend The Srewtape letters possibly above all his writings. Top stuff.
cheers,
Andy

I read Mere Christianity from a book that had been marked up, underlined and written all over. You'd think that would drive a person nuts. But it really helped me somehow. I paid more attention to the marked up pages and got more out of it as a result. I loved the book.

It's the kind of book that you need to underline and mark up and write in -- because there is just so much there and you can't digest it in just one reading. When I read it, it was a copy from the library, and I was constantly wanting to mark and underline, but I couldn't. It's funny, because my daughter, who lives 7 hours from me, was reading it at the same time as me, unbeknownst to either of us until we were almost done it. She said exactly the same thing about needing to mark certain places and underline so she could come back to it and study it more.

I bought copies for both myself and for my daughter. ;)

It's one of my favorite books, and the Screwtape Letters is excellent as well. I have some of his other books, but haven't read them yet.

Lewis is one of my favorite authors. His space trilogy is amazing, gets you to think about our world and history in a totally different way and gives a unique perspective on other life in the universe as well. Im currently reading the Weight of Glory and some of his other addresses, they are excellent because they are each a short chapter (more user friendly for todays attention spans) and they have some of the most thrilling philosophical arguments i have ever read. As for mere christianity, it is a very evangelistically oriented book (for the doubter, the sceptic, and those who want strong arguments for their faith). A great read if your willing to tackle it but if your a bit scared of it (as i was at first) try reading lee strobels books or others of the like and come back to it after you have that taste in your mouth and mind. (or try reading it with a likeminded friend, discussion and helping each other understand can go a long way in getting a lot out of it. wow this is a long post, sorry, :)
