Back in the 80s Jerry Lucas (the Memory Book) had a book "Remember the Word" which used this method to remember scriptures. It came with a set of memory cards, one for each chapter of the 4 Gospels. Pretty cool. I lost my first copy in a fire, but then came across another copy online and bought it. If you look for a copy, make sure it has the cards... which are separate from the book.
Remember the Word: Vol. 1, The Gospels: A Bible Memorization System: Jerry Lucas: Amazon.com: Books

I was looking online for some images of the cards but I cannot find any. When I get home I will see if I can scan in one of the cards just to give you an idea of how the system works. It is not word for word memorization, rather the cards have thought for thought memory reminders. You have to do the work of fleshing out the actual text. But it is cool. Takes some work to memorize the images, but it is kind of fun because the method uses "silly pictures" to make them stick in your memory.

For instance, this copy at amazon has the cards included:

Ok, so this is one of the memory cards that go with the said book by Jerry Lucas. This is the card for the first half of John Chapter 1. The foot is a memory mnemonic for John 1 (foot is the letter for the forth gospel, and the t in foot is the number 1 - hence John 1). It may not mean much to you now, but once you read the book you will know what each of these symbols mean and how they work together to create a memory picture of John 1:1 - 27. This is not a word for word memorization system, rather it is thought for thought or concept for concept.
In the bottom left corner you see a foot looking at a cross with "WORD" written on it as it reads the beginning of a book. In the left hand is a hammer "constructing" things (all things). There is a throne (God) with a box of life cereal with light rays coming from it. From these memory mnemonics you will be able to remember John 1:1-4

john1a.jpg

John 1:1-4
(1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
(2) The same was in the beginning with God.
(3) All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made.
(4) In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

It takes some work to memorize the cards... but because they are "silly" pictures they are easier to remember than rote memorization of the text.
