  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I like to memorize passages. Sometimes just a particular verse that I really like. But passages are a tad more difficult.
A long time ago I had memorized Psalm 103:1-5. But almost every time I tried to recall all 5 blessings I would always miss either the 3rd or 4th one.
I use acronyms in other things, so I thought why not come up with one for this.
I came up with FHRCS, that is the first letter of each blessing. Well that isn't even close to any word I know.
So I decided to try a phrase with those letters. After about 5 minutes of thinking on this I got:
For His Riches Can Satisfy.
Ever since I started using that acronym I have not had a problem remembering all 5 blessings.
He Forgives all my iniquities.
He Heals all my diseases.
He Redeemed my life from destruction
He Crowns me with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
He Satisfies my mouth with good, so that my youth is renewed like the eagles.

Phrase acronyms are great for remembering lists in the Bible.
They do not need to make sense, I am glad the one I already listed does.
A friend of mine came with one for the Fruit of the Spirit.
Long Johns PLanKs Grows FiGS

I would love to hear if anybody else has any acronyms they use to remember Scripture.

Psalm 119:105 I remember the verse thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. This is also about this verse a song by Amy Grant. This scripture helps to remind me of the fact that I have a clear path with God when I found the light (God's truth).

I find that using numbers for the books of the NT helps me. Sometimes just memorize part of a verse.

Matthew would be a 1....Mark a 2

Mark 10:30
as 2 ...in the world to come eternal life. 10:30

2 ....with God all things are possible. 10:27
Are you referring to the order of the NT books.
I was given these acronyms, but I never really needed them.
MMLJ ARC General Electric Power Company 5 T's PHone Jack 2 Peters, 3 Johns and Jude with a Revelation.
M = Matthew
M =Mark
L = Luke
J = John

A = Acts
R = Romans
C = 1 & 2 Corinthians

General = Galatians
Electric = Ephesians
Power = Philippians
Company = Colossians

5 T's
1 & 2 Thessalonians
1 & 2 Timothy
Titus

P = Philemon
H = Hebrews
J = James

2 Peters
3 Johns
Jude
Revelation

Someone made a gag out of the final 7 books.
2 Peters 3 Johns and Jude having a Revelation

Bet you never forget the last 7 books of the NT.

I have a horrible memory, so remembering the specifics of scripture and the verse numbers isn't my thing. I can remember some of my favorite passages, but not the verse names/numbers that go with them.

As the years go by I find were direct memory fails, instinct will sometimes take over and direct generally to the part of the Bible where a particular Bible verse or passage is likely to be.

One of the keys to memorizing Scripture is to speak it.
Just like it is easier to remember the names of people you deal with frequently versus people you see rarely. That is because you speak there name, or at least you think about it.
So speak the reference and the verse and rehearse it.
The more often you rehearse it the easier it will get.

Another great way to remember Scripture is the way Jesus showed.
When the Sadducees were questioning Jesus, He told them about the burning bush passage and then He quoted what God said.
He didn't say, "Exodus 3:15 says".
Remember instances in the Gospels like "The Prodigal son" or the Parable of the Sower".
Memorizing a passage word for word is not necessary. Put the verse in your own words.
Romans 12:1 in my own words, "By God's mercy, I give my body as a living sacrifice".
Romans 9:30-32 iny own words, "2 groups, Jews and Gentiles, the Gentiles were righteous by faith, the Jews tried to be righteous by keeping the law and stumbled".

There is a lot more detail to both of those verses, but you get the gist of them.

I think I remember scripture very well (all you need is a love for scripture imo), but I do not have a knack for remembering all verse numbers. So I'm always digging into "areas" of the Bible to get them. I know where things are near, but perhaps this is another thing I should improve on.

I keep telling myself that no one even cared for this until relatively recently, but it is useful, I admit.

This is a necessity.
Many verses I never set out to memorize, some I intentionally memorized.
But if you keep looking at and studying a passage, eventually you will become very familiar with it.
Chapter and verses are just a handy way to remember where the particular passage is at.
But in this digital age where all you have to remember is a phrase, put it into your preferred search enging, and there the verse will be. We must be careful with this though, as it could lead to laziness.

In Sunday school we were asked about a promise of God that really affected our lives and one of the ladies quoted this verse. She uses it every time circumstances seem overwhelming and she can't see the way to go. Then she prays using this verse.

I understand....i do the same...there's a wonderful promise in it, especially that when we call on God He WILL answer and show us mighty things we did not see, realize, or notice before.

It's a treasure of a verse.

This is the point I was making earlier. You don't have to memorize word for word.
After all you would only be memorizing a translation, not the original Scripture which was written in Hebrew.ou
You said "especially that when we call on God He WILL answer and show us mighty things we did not see, realize, or notice before."
The actual verse in the KJV says
Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

If you compare the 2 versions you will see that you have everything down that that the verse is saying.
This IMO is a much better way to know Scripture.
Your version of it means much to you, why do you need the exact words?
God's Word is for us for our learning that we would have patience and comfort. Romans 15:4

Memorizng scripture means little if one does not understand what it truly be said in the verses.
This is so true, which is why I put many verses in my own words. I like the KJV, but I don't converse in King James language.
