In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was not sure which forum to post this in, so I hope it is ok here. I am looking for some tips on scripture memorization. I have a very hard time memorizing things because of some meds I am on. So if anyone has any ideas that might help, I would really appreciate it. I want to be able to carry the Word with me at all times, even if no bible on hand.

To be honest if you really want to learn Scripture, and get a double blessing too. Then help out with your local AWANAS club.

But if that will not work for you what I do sometimes is write them on a 3x5 index card and place them in my dash board and in my pocket, and when I get a chance to look at it I recite it out loud to myself untill I get it. Then find someone that you can quote it back to with out looking.

What is Awana?

Awana is an international, Bible-centered children's and youth ministry providing local churches with weekly clubs and programs for preschool through high school. Our goal is to equip churches to reach children and teenagers, and their families, with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him. (Click here to learn about the hope, vision, mission and values of Awana.) The acronym Awana comes from the first letters of Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, taken from 2 Timothy 2:15.

Awana began in 1950 as a youth program at the North Side Gospel Center in Chicago, Illinois. Lance Latham, the church pastor, worked with Art Rorheim to develop a program that would appeal to young people, reach them with the gospel and train them in the Lord’s work. Other churches heard about the success of the Awana program and asked if they could use it. By 1960, Awana had registered 900 clubs.

Today, more than 10,400 churches in the United States run Awana. There are clubs in all 50 states. Awana can also be found in 3,200 churches in 109 other countries and six continents. Jack Eggar is our President/CEO. Art Rorheim serves as our Co-founder/President Emeritus.

Regional missionaries and ministry teams will assist you in establishing Awana as a vital part of your local church.

Scripture memory by 3's work very well. I have been teaching this method for almost 30 years. Anyone who has used the approach has been able to memorize, even a 90 year old member!

1. Pick a verse: i.e. "For I determined not know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." 1 Corinthians 2:2.

Speak the first 3-4 words, three times, and then add three more words, and recite all of it three times - always include the reference.

For I determined
For I determined
For I determined

For I determined not to know anything
For I determined not to know anything
For I determined not to know anything

For I determined not to know anything among you except
For I determined not to know anything among you except
For I determined not to know anything among you except

For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:2
For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:2
For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:2

2. Follow that process in step 1, three times each day for three days.

3. On the fourth day, pick another verse and follow Steps 1 and 2. BUT, review the first Bible verse saying it completely three times, three times each day.

4. The next week, you can add a third verse to memorize. But always say the ones you have learned three times in a row, three times in a day.

At the end of 36 days, you will never forget the Bible verse. Review the verses once a week thereafter or as needed. I memorized some verses in 1978 that I still do not review regularly, but they come to me immediately.

Don't mean to step on any toes. But understanding what is meant is better than rote verbatim quotation. And when there is any question as to the precise wording of the verses then there is of course the Bible as the final authority.

John 5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

These guys studied to memorize what the scriptures said while oblivous as to what they meant. I recommend a reading or Bible on CD listening to the Bible all the way through as many times as you can. And in Bible study first pray the Holy Spirit to open the scriptures to you (John 16:13, 2 Peter 1:20-21). Also buy an exhaustive concordance. The pocket concordnaces or the one in the back of the Bible are essentially useless because seldom will they include the words or verses you seek. The exhaustive concordance has every word of scripture catalogued in it and many include original language lexicons.

I have found the best way to memorize is a variation of the 3x5 cards. Write out the verses, speaking them while you write. Actually, make a couple of sets of cards like this, speaking the words as you write them. In this you are adding one more layer to the possible ways your brain will file the information. Seeing it on the page in your Bible is one layer; the tactile sense is engaged in writing, and sight again in seeing the words come out of your pen onto the card. The auditory memory is called into play when we hear it, and the act of speaking it also registers in the memory.
Memory is a very tricky thing, so the more avenues you can use to retrieve what you learn the better. Also, repetition is very important, as was stated earlier.

i have become a person that reads the bible a lot, but as to memorization i am not practising it. whenever something strikes me, i will remember automatically.

remember it is gods good pleasure to work good deeds thru us who he has prepared in advance. so often he just gives us the right words at the right moment when we talk to people.

definitely we need the holy spirit to learn scripture to use it the way god wants us to use it.

jesus quoted without chapter and verse number.

the word is spirit.

greetings in christ

I agree...quite often memorizing scripture is the first step in taking it out of context.:o

#1. Come to Word to contact the Lord and enjoy Him.
#2. Sing the scripture. Make up your own tunes.
#3. Memorization is work, it takes time and effort. It is analogous to playing the piano.
#4. Use audio tapes.
#5 The more scripture that gets into your long-term memory the better.
#6 Love the Lord first and formost. His words are life and truth.

I guess I have to list every aspect of every detail of every part of every doctrine to make sure everything is covered in every post. ;)

Of course, memorization is not the total answer. No one here suggested otherwise. However, the OP asked about memorization, so that was the focus of the answers. What you suggest about concordance study and lexical studies is very important for a well-rounded understanding of the Scriptures. And of course, the Holy Spirit is the one who leads us into all truth, but the Holy Spirit does that through the Word. Therefore, memorized Scripture offers another opportunity for the Holy Spirit to lead, teach, guide, comfort, etc. (did I cover all the aspects? guess the "etc." takes care of everything doesn't it ;) ) the believer.

understand I am not pooh poohing the notion of scripture memorization. the emphasis rather ought to be on understanding the concept than rote repitition. and what happens in a multi-translation siuation? what about when the translation is weak on representing the original greek or hebrew?

1 Thessalonians 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. KJV

1 Thessalonians 4:15 According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. NIV

And this is not just a more modern translation issue.

Genesis 22:7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. KJV

Genesis 22:7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. NIV

The Hebrew is actually more closely represented in the KJV than ANY of the new translations even the NKJV.

God provided HIMSELF a LAMB...

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Hebrews 10:5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, O God.’”

God indeed provided himself as the lamb!

I would second the idea of writings verses on index cards and stuff like that and posting them where you will see them every day. I have a buddy who does this with putting notes on his car's dash board. I think I might start doing something similar.

I also love the MaPaw site. I wish it was more personal though. Like for instance, you could login and have your own section of verses you're trying to memorize.
