Memorizing Scripture is an important treasure to have. That is one of the reasons why the KJV is important, for the meaning of God is set forth, and others know exactly what one is referring to, rather than just some personal thought. Many modern versions express the Bible in various concepts and miss or minimize the true thought, I see. When speaking publicly, people know it is the Bible and not the speaker's opinions when a verse is quoted from the KJV.

In group Bible studies all can have the same ref. clear for comparing with other verses in the Bible by the KJV. Since many professing Christian groups today don't have group Bible study, this would not be of interest to them.

When you learn scripture do you bother learning the part of the bible it's from? because with a song it wouldn't tell you where it's located...

The more you read the bible and take bible classes at church, the more you learn how to recognize where the scripture is located.

I took a 2 year Bible class called the Bethel Bible series and it involved TONS of memorization, reading, reports, etc... Great class and a lot of work but I loved it.

If you are trying to memorise one or two verses at a time, should you stop reading your bible? would it be a distraction from learning something off by heart, or am I just being silly? :p

It is more important to read and comprehend passages of Scripture, rather than memorize 1 or 2 verses from those passages. You will also find that it is easier to remember verses from a passage if you concentrate on studying the passage itself.

A word of caution: There are radical churches and sects which use the knight-works-exegesis argument in order to convince others that only their particular church/sect is 'on the right track' with God. This argument involves taking individual verses, and even 1/2 verses, out of the Bible, stitching them together in a quiltlike fashion, and then using the endproduct as 'evidence' that only they are 'right with God'.

Many times they will 'hit' their target with a multitude of these verses in what I call 'the avalanche effect' in order to achieve their end. They count on their target's accepting what they say as true without looking up the passages that they took the verses and 1/2 verses from. But if they did take the time to look up those passages, they would find that the message contained in them oftimes is the exact opposite of what those churches/sects are promoting.

Yes, one should avoid those who build sectarian doctrines on verses here and there and taken out of context. One needs to first find a truly scriptural assembly and not one built upon some men who have religious ideas not supported by the Word of God.

You didn't answer my question at all. I'm not concerned about what translation I memorise from, I want to know whether I should keep up my bible reading while I memorize scriptures, or if it will distract me.

Sorry if I missed your point, but it seems to me that the source of the verse (the Bible Version) could be a concern; and one can be distracted from the meaning while trying to memorize a concept rather than a clear statement of what God is saying, as the KJV and NKJV show.

Certainly one should keep up reading their Bible, but I wonder how one can effectively memorize verses presented in some of the descriptive ways found in many new Versions; and I find some of the verses quoted in modern Versions lead people to think there are contradictions in the Bible --which there are not. All the Word of God must be in complete harmony. Look up always!

My view is that memorizing the written word is not nearly as important as understanding the meaning and trying to live by it.

Some people tend to think that each word of a verse carries so much importance, not realizing that the English Bible was translated from another language.

The truth is not found in words alone, but in the understanding in your heart.

Dear chi cchick. The two Commandments which Jesus gave us in:
Matthew 22: 35-40: kept drawing me, 1) Love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds. 2) Love our neighbour as we love ourselves.
They seemed to follow me for a long time, and I felt strongly drawn to them.
God is Love, and God wants loving sons and daughters, that seemed to inherit my brain, or should I say my heart? A number of years ago, Jesus knocked at the door to my heart, and I happily invited Him into my heart.
I kept imagining joyfully laughing men and women all around me. It is what God wants from us as much as possible. Sadly it cannot be so always, but often the need arises for some happy words and smiles.
The Bible tells us to " Repent and to Be Born Again," to repent of selfish
attitudes and loveless behaviour, and to become as God wants us to be:
Loving God and loving and caring for brothers and sisters, God made us all in
His image, and we are capable of Love and Compassion. When I think of those words in the Bible: " Love God and love our neighbour," it gives me a
wonderful feeling of Loving God and loving our neighbour, and any sadness or loneliness leaves me, and I know that I am never on my own. Jesus is with us, and we never walk alone. I say this with love, chi cchick.
Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.
