  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

My parents were VERY thrifty - my brother and I called them tight LOL! Just before school started my mom would take us to Wilmington Dry Goods (which sold irregulars before irregulars were the in thing) and get me 5 blouses (Mom made my skirts) and a pair of shoes for school. We went to Robert Hall to get my dad a new suit and I was treated to a Sunday School dress. You could fit my clothes into a 12" closet. I wore them until I outgrew them or they fell apart, whichever came first. We only got toys on Birthdays or Christmas and at Christmas we got maybe 2-3 toys. I had mainly books - still love books. I thought I was deprived until years later when I realized they had paid cash for my college education and I didn't owe a dime. They definitely had their priorities in order. :)

I'm guessing that your parents, like mine, grew up in the Great Depression - made their generation very, very frugal.

Another thing I remember - we'd be outside playing for hours and hours - came in for lunch and dinner, then right back outside again. Riding bikes, playing ball, hide & seek, climbing trees, and our nighttime favorite - catching fireflies.

That's how we were, so much of the time. And when I got tired of playing outside, I'd read a book. Our church had prayer service every Wednesday night, and on the way there, we'd stop at the library and I'd get 4 or 5 books to read every week. I read a lot. LOL.

I am afraid those times are gone if you live in the city.... especially. Reading is limited too... I used to play outside for the whole day and night .... during the summer time especially.. Now video games and computer limit the kid's outdoor time...:(...

LOL. I remember one summer my mother made us make a schedule so we didn't fritter away our time and forget our chores. My one younger brother's schedule looked like this.

9:00 AM Watch TV
9:30 AM Watch TV
10:00 AM Play
10:30 AM Play
11:00 AM Watch TV
11:30 AM Watch TV
12 Noon Lunch
1:00 PM Watch TV
1:30 PM Watch TV
2:00 PM Play
2:30 PM Play
3:00 PM Play
3:30 PM Play
4:00 PM Play
4:30 PM Watch TV
5:00 PM Watch TV
5:30 PM Dinner
6:30 PM Play
7:00 PM Play
7:30 PM Watch TV
8:00 PM Watch TV
8:30 PM Watch TV
9:00 PM Bedtime

I'm sure it was hard to find a time to squeeze his chores in. We still rib him about his schedule. LOL.

I remember when our family would walk once a week down the Dairy Queen together - my little sister was still pretty young.
We all ordered our ice cream but my sister didn't know what she wanted & asked the lady what kinds of ice cream she had.
(31 flavors) LOL
So, the poor lady literally listed every single flavor of ice cream they had.

My sister thought a minute and then said "I'll have Vanilla".

^_^
my whole family about collapsed. after all that effort she went thru, my sister just gets plain vanilla! :swoon:

(sorry, probly just funny to me becuz I was there)

:sorry:

DQ was the favorite ice cream stop in our town~my dad always seemed to get a rootbeer float; to this day I cannot see what is good about melted ice cream in rootbeer

He also would get malts~not shakes. I remember one time I went in to get (this was before drive-thru) stuff and he made me take his malt back in because there wasn't any in it. Then he started telling me to tell them to put extra malt in his...strange one my daddy ;)

MrJim - it's positively unAmerican to dislike Root Beer Floats - they are such a yummy combo of creamy drink and root beer dessert! Ha ha ha. I have a huge bottle of rootbeer in my fridge as I write this and Breyer's vanilla in the freezer "for such a time as this"! LOL!

And nothing's better than malt in a milk shake - it's really hard to find these days! :(

I believe I would like your dad!
