She learned to obey Drusilla's wishes at a young age, and this eventually lead to Melanie being an accomplice for committing child abuse against Ameh, an orphaned fairy the mage took in for purely self-serving purposes..
Unknown to the mage or the little fairy, Melanie eventually became tormented by her own conscience and fear of her own mother, so had called child services.
Both Melanie and Ameh were removed from Drusilla's home, but not before a lot of damage had already been done to both girls, impacting them quite differently.
While Ameh learned not to trust and let anyone close to her, Melanie was haunted by guilt and fear because of the things she witnessed and participated in with Drusilla.
Eventually, Melanie got the chance to confront Drusilla, and publically apologize to Ameh, but neither one made it easy on her.
Since then, she has done her best to live a very decent life. She hasn't married and is not ready to have children of her own. That prospect would scare her to death. Even if she had a child and was loving to it, Melanie would still doubt she was a good mother.
