  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Howdy!

Not quite sure where else to put this,
but I guess for my first post I'll ask about Mel Tari who wrote "Like A Mighty Wind", which was about his miraculous experiences during the Indonesian revival in 1965 on the island of Timor.
I haven't heard much about him outside that time period. Was he legit, if he was what else has he done since then? Anyone heard of him?

Have you heard anything more about this Mel Tari? I'm reading the book now. This is either an amazing historical fact or a great deceptive fabrication. I know God can do these things. But the question is did He?

Hi, I read Mel's book in the mid-70s, and then it was quite contemporary and the co-author was a respected western Christian writer. There was no suggestion that the experiences were fabricated, but were a consequence of a powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit at that time - Revival, I guess.
Just to correct some info posted:
Mel lived on the independent territory of East Timor, and that's where the events occurred. Not long after I read the books, East Timor was invaded by Indonesia and there followed over 20 years of Military rule and repression of the indigenous population. I had often reflected on what had happened to Mel Tari and the others in his circle during those years... Had he survived? been imprisoned? So I am very interested in the posting from Vicki about the FGBMI meeting in Kopeka - does anyone have any more information about Mel in these days? Anyone know of the condition of the East Timorese church now that independence has finally been restored?

Mel Tari is alive and well, lives in California with his American wife Joyce, and their three boys. I am a personal acquaintance of his, and can testify that he is the "real deal". He and his family are some of the sweetest people you have ever met, and very much "down to Earth". If you get an opportunity to see him minister somewhere, do not hesitate to go and see him. Unfortunately, he does not promote himself much at all; therefore, finding a place where he is ministering is somewhat difficult unless you happen to know him--even then, some of us have a hard time tracking him down.

As to his books, Mel has not written even one (he is not a writer) and the stories were dictated to his co-author (who was also the one who talked him into publishing them). He doesn't receive a penny from the sales personally, but has assigned ALL of the royalties to further international missions around the world. He spends much of the year traveling the world preaching the Gospel throughout Asia, Europe, the Americas and Lord knows where else.

I happened upon this discussion by accident, and thought my notes might be a blessing. I hope they helped. Enjoy the book!

I just talked with Mel by phone today, and he has just returned from speaking at a missions conference in Mexico.

I discussed the idea of a web site for his ministry to keep people better informed of his contemporary ministry, and he was open to my looking into it for him. I'll keep you folks posted if there are any new developments.

Blessings to all!
