Agreed. Looks brilliant - WRT the topic and the shooting. AFAIK, Gibson never stated that he was just going to make "Catholic" type movies after Passion.

That's true. I think I just assumed he would and given the whole religious connotation one normally makes when we hear the word apocolypse I just figured this would be a Catholic movie. I guess it still could be. I mean we don't have any hardfast rules on when the earth will be demolished so this could actually be a plausible scenario. Kind of creepy when I think of it but I'm ready to go anytime He takes me.

I haven't read this yet but thought it would be interesting for any who are into this type of stuff.

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10082b.htm

I scanned through your link and found this...

While they are all now Catholics, with resident priests in all the towns, that fact in no way softens their animosity toward the conquering race. They still keep up many of their ancient rites, particularly those relating to the planting and harvesting of the crops. Many of these survivals are described by Brinton in a chapter of his "Essays of an Americanist".

So maybe the movie is about us, after all. :)

yeah I saw that too. I was looking for anything that might relate to 2012 on newadvent in terms of Maya but couldn't find that. maybe this is just about the end of that particular civilization and not much to do with the end of ours.

Or maybe Mel's gonna have some nice correlations between what they think happened then with the Maya to what is happening now in our society.

I was thinking of that too. Thing is though from what I've read so far no one really truly knows what happened to their society to make it fall. Of course I'm just a nobody doing a few google searches and perhaps there is info out there that I just haven't found yet. There are theories of course that they were too war-mongerish and I guess he could go that route but if that's the case I'll hate the movie. I hope that's not what it's gonna be like.

One thing I really think it will have is a lot of gore. I'm not gonna get into it here but I've read some really sick stuff that the leader would do before he would make a declaration of war to his people....let's just say it involves his damaging his own private parts and such. . .

I think you are right. There are a few theories out regarding the Mayain fall, but I believe we don't know exactly what happened.

As far as gore, that doesn't surprise me. Mel excels at gore (Braveheart, Mad Max, Passion, The Patriot etc).

Good point. I thought I read somewhere the Maya's might have gone downhill because of overtilled farmland, which doesn't sound like much of a good movie from the sex & violence perspecitve.
