  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I really enjoy Mel Gibson as an actor. I like his work very much. As for his personal life, I'm sick and tired of celebrities tearing him to pieces over his newly 'train wreck' of a life these days. Am I excusing his actions? Absolutely not. However, there are obviously issues in this guy's life that are causing him to act this way. He wasn't always this way.

For #1, he's lost and needs Christ; and #2, he's apparently drinking again (he hadn't been for years because of his addiction) and I think that's playing a HUGE role in his actions and anger problem. There are several types of drunks/alcoholics in the world, and they are: quiet drunks, angry drunks (verbally, physically or even both) and functioning drunks (those who some how find a way to maintain a job and handle responsibilities despite their addiction). There's other types, but these three are probably the most common.

Mel Gibson is what I call an angry drunk. His behavior completely supports it in my opinion. The guy has got a serious problem and instead of persecution, he needs help. Big time.

Mel Gibson is a better man than most in Hollywood. But, for someone who has set himself up as a public example of a Christian, he's been a bit of a disappointment. Leaving his wife was wrong on so many levels. Passion of the Christ was a bit of a sell-out to Jews, in a failed attempt to keep his Hollywood career. Or, maybe Gibson is right, that he would have been murdered if he hadn't sold-out a little

What are your thoughts on him, his movies and his personal life?

As a person who has set himself up as a Christian I find him to be very hypocritical, and like all hypocrites he deserves the wrath of the public. That being said I don't really care what happens in his personal life. He can go the way of Charlie Sheen or go jump off the Golden Gate for all I care. I just hope he doesn't take any innocent lives down with him.

As an actor he was good-looking when he was younger, but he doesn't really have much of a acting range. I don't have an interest in his movies anymore, and Braveheart  is one of the most highly-overrated films that I have ever seen.

I think his personal life is none of our business.

He's a great actor who's work I enjoy. The newer stuff he's been doing late has been fantastic.

This.

Everyones got problems. Only difference with celebrities is that they are constantly being watched for it.

Hypocrit? Yes he is, aswell as every other christian and human on this earth.

Noone's personal life is our business, and we have no right to judge.

He's a good actor. loce his older work, and Edge of Darkness was amazing.

I think most movie lovers would disagree, one of my favorite movies of all time and the range of emotions that Gibson showed in the film were amazing in my opinion.

Yeah it was! I watched it the other day and this guy still definitely has it! Although extremely violent, it was one of the best movies I've seen all year. Compelling to say the least and the action scenes were top notch, the realism was so brutal and raw it was scary.

I really feel sorry for the guy, the man I know is a professing Christian and he made The Passion from a contrite heart, out of love and admiration for the Saviour. But he's got his personal demons to get rid off before they get rid of him. My heart truly goes out to him.

Gibson's personal life is our business. The Bible sanely teaches that elders of the church are to have good families, one wife who is good and children who re obedient. No one who is divorced is fit to be a leader of Christians. Gibson isn't pastor, but he is a public figure and a public promoter of Christianity. So, we have a right, even an obligation, to judge him for leaving his wife.

But, as a I said, he's a better man than most in Hollywood.

Personally I think that the pressure put upon him after making The Passion was enough to make anyone fall apart...we all face that kind of pressure but but not all of us are harassed with it by the media because we aren't public figures. Most of us mess up as well...as for his personal life...hopefully with time and God's help it'll get it straightened out.

Other moviegoers have the right to their opinion as do I. Their opinions do not negate my own. Braveheart is still a highly-overated and boring snoozefest of an ego-centric actor/director. A younger Sean Connery or another equally talanted Scottish actor could portray William Wallace (and get the accent to boot), but Mel Gibson's performance suffered from several shortcomings. I simply could not believe that Gibson was William Wallace as he simply does not have that big of an acting range.

Well, I completely disagree with you on every point and I believe the Academy did as well.

Mel Gibson's personal life is no more our business than yours is. He's not a pastor like you said nor is he a church elder. Simply being a promoter of Christianity doesn't make his life an open book for us to examine every piece of. But I do agree we have a right to judge his actions. That's Biblical. We aren't to judge his soul but we sure can judge the actions that we see of anyone. If we don't judge actions then we must accept everything someone does as A-okay, not a problem. And frankly his religion doesn't mean squat to me as he's a Catholic. If he shed that from his life and decided to follow Christ without all the Catholicism right on up to El Popo, I'd dig that a whole lot about him. It's probably something that he needs as I think Catholicism is something that's keeping him from having a truly solid faithful relationship with God. If he can get that then he has a chance to really straighten his life out. It's sad how he's fallen. His overall body of (film) work has suffered because of it. I've been a fan of his forever (literally since I was like 2 days old!) and it would be great to see him making cool, well-liked movies again that do well at the box office. Mel (I call him Mel cuz we're tight) in movies that no one really knows about feels like a shame to me. He's not an indie kinda guy. He still seems like a box office kinda guy -- "Let's go see the new Mel Gibson movie, it's opening this weekend." Ya know? I really hope he gets back on his feet. To feel that it doesn't matter what happens to him, that it would be fine if he just killed himself, that's not right. He's a human being. He's a Christian and he's flawed like I am and like anyone reading this is. Christians fall. That doesn't automatically make them horrible hypocrites to be shunned and forgotten about. People fall all the time. Hopefully they can get back up again, get right with God, and get back to doin' what they do best which in Mel's case is hitting women . . . D'OH! Did I just say that??! I'm just kidding. Has he even been charged with hitting? I hope not. I know he's yelled a lot and said really weird things. Whether or not he has been violent, no one should ever joke about violence like that. Momentary lapse of taste. Anyway, I meant to say it would be nice to see him making people smile again at the movies :)
