Mel Gibson is, unlike what many people think, not a Catholic. He is a member of a schismatic group that broke off of the Catholic Church. The Church's doctrines include the belief that Mary is as much of a Mediatrix as Jesus is. In English, that means that Mary can provide salvation just like Jesus, which is of course considered heresy among Catholics and the rest of orthodox Christianity.

Well, why not look up this answer? I saw an interview with him on tv before the passion came out where he answered this question. He's always been Catholic (as all Catholics will say if they are cradle Catholics) but he became passionate about his faith some years ago when he was already in hollywood and suffering from alcoholism. he brought his life back in order and now is dedicated to his faith.

yeah he is part of a movement that stil does masses in latin, etc...

Not true; he has always held a religious life, which he credits to his father.
In an interview I saw with him, he claimed that he was in the 'hollywood' life (i.e drugs, drinking, etc) and returned to God, got cleaned up, etc.

Yeah he only in the last few years was convicted and started seriously practicing his faith. It all began around the tme he did "Signs". but he seems pretty serious about it now. It is amazing how powerful a tool of the Lord one stray sheep can prove to be upon returning to the flock.
