In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey All,

Who watched the interview Dianne Sawyer did with Mel Gibson about The Passion of the Christ? What did you think of it?

I didn't watch all parts but I'm glad he pretty much presented the gospel to viewers. However, he did say that other faiths can get to heaven, implying that you don't have to be a Christian. I think he actually meant that Christ died for all of us and that it's not really about religion, but about Christ. He just made it seem as if he believes everyone gets to heaven, even non-Christians.

Well in the end isn't it about Christ? I mean some pretty interesting questions are going to come up after the Passion is over with. I mean what if NON religious types start asking questions. I mean they're going to ask well Jesus died for us but yet for me to go to heaven I have to "believe" in this religion with all these rules?

Personally I say if you praise Jesus, believe that Jesus died for our sins, and that Jesus is the Son of God and the true Saviour then religion really isn't needed. I mean even me in religions before are a pain. I mean each "religion" has their own rules that you must believe.

I'll go and try to watch the interview if possible.

I thought he came off as kinda weird. I was surprised at his mannerisms and body language. then again, I am not used to seeing him and have never idolized him as a sex symbol...so there ya go

I think he is right that all CAN get to heaven despite their lack of christian knowledge. I have been arguing with some christians about this who believe that only christians who say He is the christ can go to heaven. What about people who never even heard of him?? ARe you saying they go to hell? or that they are not saved?

I think they have a chance. And that they will be judged on the way they treat people. I think the same thing of so-called professed christians. Just because you say the words doesn't mean you go to heaven. Evil people can say it too and I doubt they'd be let in.

yes, I agree, she didn't stick to discussing the movie well. And I really don't get anti-semitism in this movie...I just don't see what point the Jews have made...I mean look at the bible ...aren't the Jews God's chosen people if I'm not mistaken? Didn't He lead them into the promised land...and also, Jesus was born a Jew. I think the Jewish people, kind as they may be, are blowing this out of proportion because they don't believe Christ is the savior. On that note, the simple fact is without Christ NO ONE enters the kingdom of heaven! Now, I suppose God reveals Himself to those who have never ever heard, but He places the job of telling others about Him on us. Also, never hearing of God whatsoever, and living in America or most places on this earth and knowing what the bible says and refusing to accept it and believe it as truth is a different thing. No, Jews who do not believe Jesus is the Christ will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Why be politically correct and make it sound as if everyone goes? It's easier for Christians? That's what Mel said and I really don't understand why he was trying to be politically correct! Hell and Satan are realities and I think Christians need to stop trying to not offend other religions. America is supposed to be a country where you can believe what you want without facing persecution. Well, if that's really true, I shouldn't have to worry about saying I believe hell is real and those who do not accept Christ will go there for eternity. Hollywood is supposed to be so "openminded" but they are really just hypocrits IMO.

p.s. if they think the Passion is controversial, wait til I start making movies! watch out hollywood!

Oh and a correction...like datingsmarts said it's not mere belief it's a relationship...it's giving your life over to God and admitting you are a sinner. See Romans for more info. on salvation. :D

heheh...I like that attitude L4H. Ditto for me.

I was impressed with the interview, but whats happened during the commercial breaks also impressed me. From the looks of it, there are going to be quite a few Christian centered specials on in the next seveal months. What perfect timing too. I meanwith all of the stuff going on in our society today, not the least of all in San Fransisco, we need this right now. What a great opportunity to spread the word of God to those who've never known him. I'm excited to see ohow the countries attitudes shift in the next several months.

I wouldn't be surprised if they edited what he said -
He probably talked about that topic more but they probably put only 2 or 3 lines of his in the TV version.

Yeah, he was pretty quirky. Maybe thats just how he is.
For all the garbage thats been thrown at him, he might be sick of dealing with the same topics over and over.

Of course they have a chance. God desires all men to be saved.
If they do not know Christ, they can still desire God, and desire to be saved. And when they die and see Christ, I believe they will find what they've always been looking for.

Given that Mel's a devout Catholic, I would venture a guess that he was stating the Catholic position, which got severely edited.

The Catholic position would be that someone who has not had the opportunity to know Christ has "invincible ignorance." God, being omniscent, knows whether or not this person would have come to Christ, had they had the opportunity. This is known as "baptism of desire." :prayer:

Hmm interesting! I didn't know that was the Catholic Church's position. I didn't even know they had one on that matter or that most churches do. Does anyone know what protestants view is? As far as protestant doctrine? Yes, that part was obviously quite edited!

Living4Him,

There are major differences between different Protestant groups on this issue. Some believe in universalism- that all will be saved. Others believe that if you are not a member of their congregation, it's barbecue time for you.

There isn't one Protestant position.

I didn't see all of the interveiw but I think it was a attempt to make Mel Gibson and Christians to look unitelligent , like fools. I wonder how much of that interveiw as edited by people who don't like Christians.

I think Mel did a fine job at expression his faith and the meaning of the movie , dispite of Dianne Sawyers attacks or attempted attacks . Since I did not really see all of the interveiw I cannot really intelligently comment on it as a whole.

Now, not to change the subject , but I saw a comment here and I have to reply..

DatingSmarts you said "satan knows Jesus is the Savior ...,do ya think he's getting in?" And your comment was in regards to heaven.

I don't know if this was the point you were trying to make but..... , it takes alot more than just knowing that Jesus is the Savior, just knowing won't do anyone any good. You have to acknowledge and worship him as Lord and Savior and only then will you be permitted to be in Heaven. ( that is the very Basics of it) I don't want to get into a big debate about whos going to heaven and who's not and how that happens.., because that would be taking away fromthe orginal content this thread and I don't think that would be very fair to the person who started it.
