Meghan McCain accused President Trump of making fun of her father's injuries. What Trump really said was that he did not consider McCain a "hero" for getting shot down. Trump, like the rest of us, has a right to his opinion. In fact, McCain was a "negative ace," having lost more aircraft than he shot down. His injuries occurred not because of torture, as so many tall tales by the press portrayed, but because of injuries due to his ejection. McCain broke the military code of conduct (name, rank, and serial number) days after having been shot down by providing extensive information and a number of his long interviews were published by foreign press. The actual tapes of his conversations were not made public, but were eventually provided to his mother. At the time the press dubbed McCain as "songbird," but in later years, after the Keating Five and after he worked with John Kerry, the press worked hard to portray him as a hero. As to what he admitted to U.S. authorities, McCain, in the 1990s, put forth legislation (which passed) to have his entire debrief along with the debriefs of other POWs to never be made public.
