Meekness is listed as one of the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:23. In the Bible meekness is charactarized by gentleness or mildness. It does not refer to timidity. Meekness, does not mean weakness.
The Lord described himself as meek, but he certainly was not weak or timid: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." Matt 11:29
Christian meekness is expressed first toward God and then toward men.
" But I will leave within you the meek and humble, who trust in the name of the LORD." Zeph 3:12
Christian meekness went deeper than the secular meekness in ancient Greek writings. Secular meekness is expressed in outward conduct only and how that conduct is related to mankind. Christian meekness on the other hand describes an inward quality that is primarily related to God.
Meekness is based on humility which is not a natural quality but is the product of a renewed nature in Christ. It is an outgrowth of a spiritual relation to God.
Meekness is that spiritual quality which allows us to see God's dealings with us as good, and to accept them without disputing or reisisting.
