  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok, I know this is quite a rare sport, but I have seen that it does exist in other countries as well, so I wanted to ask if others on here happen to do that. I have weekly training in a swordfencing school in northern Germany, we fight with two-handed swords and I have been doing it for about 4 years.

I fence at a salle in Seattle. I'm a beginner, and they make you start with foil or singlestick. I do both. I toy with other weapons at home as well as Western unarmed stuff. I want to two-hand sword at some point. I don't train as much as I would like because it's kind of expensive, but some day I'll move past the beginner stuff!

What style do they teach at your school? I'm guessing Liechtenaur/German stuff.

The video is a wonderful presentation - regret that I am not able to understand the words spoken though the action is very clearly expressed. Looks like a great form of recreation.

In my youth I did épée and was good at it. Unfortunately, my parents were too cheap to pay for real lessons in this fine art/sports form and I could not pursue it further.

Hopefully, fencing will remain a vibrant part of the Summer Olympics.

I think the fundamental issue is how authentic thus really is. Medieval sword combat was about closing with an opponent and smashing his skull in with some part of the sword as quickly as possible. Making a modern sport out of that while retaining any degree of authenticity seems a stretch.
