  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

According the book "Will the Real Heretics Please Stand Up?", the early Christians would neither participate nor watch plays with immorality in the plot. Nor would they go to the Arena to watch the blood and gore of the gladiators and animal fights. Where do you stand with movies? The implied immorality, and the gore?

Hm, interesting topic. I've heard that about the early Christians too. I really don't know how or to what extent we as Christians should do that sort of thing today. Do you know why they didn't watch or participate in these things?

Personally I find myself less interested in watching that sort of stuff than I used to. There seems more bad than good in it, so it's kind'a one of those even if it may be lawful it's not benefical things, ya know? I think it's hard to say how far to go on this though or where to draw the line.

Thanks for the thought provoking post.

Dont get me started! LOL

---------> rant coming on <---------

I am completely sickened by the complete trash on tv!

My husband works out of town 6 weeks and then is home 6 weeks. When he is gone, the only tv I watch is spongebob squarepants with my kids and an occasional, appropriate, movie. I have no use for the tv.

When he is home, he watches tv, and as I want to be near him, I do sometimes watch with him. The horror!
(let me explain right now that I have not always been close to God and I have seen my fair share of every kind of bad entertainment there is..)

But lately, the closer I get to God, the more appalled I am at the values, or lack thereof, of todays culture.

What are we seeing?
Casual sex is not only ok, but fully expected and the "norm."
Selfishness, looking out for number one at others expense, greed, the love of money, obsession with material goods, obsession with looks and superficial things.... hatefulness...

The reality shows are the worst. They tell todays youth that if you dont look good, you are worthless.
Cheating is promoted, promiscuity, drunkeness, partying, living life only for your pleasures.

Its all in the Bible. Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.
Stepping on people to get what you want. Constantly wanting more, more, more of everything.

Even the t-shirts I am seeing lately are all about selfish, bad attitudes. This week so far I have seen.... "I love ME!" " I am the best there is!" "I love my bad attitude!" "Your boyfriend bought me this shirt." I could go on...
Satan is in full control. Everything being promoted is completely contrary to Christian values. It is creating a generation of greedy, selfish, hateful people who have no morals and no concern for anyone but themselves.

James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

We are not supposed to have such a friendship with worldy ways. Now dont get me wrong, I am not saying that every movie and tv show is bad, just the majority of them, and I do not believe it is wrong to watch tv and movies. But I believe that if by watching them, we begin to slowly take on these worldy beliefs and attitudes, then it is wrong.

Also, someone once said, how can you laugh at what God finds abominable?

Strangely, I'd be more ok with watching a movie with quite a bit of violence than watching a movie with ungodly values. Most of the movies that are NOT promoting blatantly bad morality, even these have very subtle worldy attitudes.

I still like that old saying "Is this a movie you would feel comfortable watching if Jesus was sitting next to you watching with you?"

I think that is a very good guide to use when choosing your entertainment.

----------- rant complete -----------
