  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

it sounds like part of James 2:26 "so faith without deeds is dead." (is that the same verse?)

the idea is if you really believe something, you will have actions that show you really believe it. The Bible gives an example right there in James, that Rahab a prostitute asked Joshua to save her and her family, she believed Joshua had God with him, and they were going to take over the city. She had faith and asked him to spare her family, and she helped them escape. We should have faith like that too, I believe, that we ask Jesus for his help, and take actions in our lives to do what He asks of us, for our own good.

What James is talking about is faith and obedience. Your faith needs to be strong enough that it produces obedience. He refers to Abraham:

"You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, 'Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,' and he was called God's friend." - James 2:20-23

But let's get the rest of the story behind his faith:

"By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, 'It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.' Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death." - Hebrews 11:17-19

Abraham believed God so much that he obeyed the Lord's strange command. His faith was strong enough to stand upon with actions. And God told Abraham not to harm the boy at the last second, providing a ram for the sacrifice (Gen 22:12-13).

These are excellent answers. In the same spirit, the context of James, Chapter 2 is caring for the poor, and loving everyone equally, regardless of their "status" in the world.

This surely is the heart of our Lord, and God, and Savior, Jesus Christ. Therefore, it should be our heart as well.

All of us, regardless of age, or financial standing, can share the Love of God without partiality, and can do something to care for those who have less than we do.

Faith in Jesus Christ is a gift of the Holy Spirit. It is not at all dependent on a choice or decision that we make. Such a "choice" is in fact a product of Christ's choosing you, thus the "choice" is not ours but His.

Faith produces "fruit" Paul talks about the "fruit of the Spirit" in Galatians 5:22-23. These are the types of things that James refers to in his epistle when he says "faith without works is dead".
It's also explained in Jesus' statements in John 15:1-2, "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful." Those branches of the vine that do not bear fruit are not true branches. They are pruned and burned.

OK, but ... get ready.

Faith means relying. You're relying on God. Well, that's not just you "saying so." Nobody can rely on a ship to carry him over water, and then roll around on the poop deck like he's drowning in the water.

So what do we typically do if we really rely on God?

We're so grateful for His forgiveness. When we're not forgetful, we take opportunities to tell Him so. That's part of prayer. And if we think His forgiveness is real -- we have to believe HE is real, don't we? So we talk with Him closer than our closest friend, more deserving of our obedience than a perfect Parent. Mmm, that's part of prayer! (and there's more, but you get the point?)

Reading the Bible we're reading a letter from this closest Friend, this perfect Parent. We see where we came from -- what a mess we were. We see what He wants for us -- and it's freedom, not slavery! It's eternal life, not punishment! So all the more avidly we read to know more about what He says about Himself, what He says about us.

The Bible has challenges, too. God cares about more people than just me. If we believe in our forgiveness, we will forgive others of the things that have offended us -- they are so much smaller than we've offended Him. If we trust God, we try to experience His perfect commands, we continue to believe they're right. We struggle to understand and return to Him when we don't do what He wants, because He forgives us. More challenges: He tells us to give freely to others, because we've been given so much. It urges self-sacrifice, because God has sacrificed His Only-begotten Son ... It goes on.

But there's a reason for all this.

The Bible is about redemption -- it's not about laying out stiff requirements for us to reach. It's so easy to slip into the Bible as "stuff I gotta do!" But it's not about that. It's about receiving God's redemption (and how close that is! it cuts right into your soul!). Then from the Bible we find out how deep that redemption goes. With other believers we can see how real our experience is. And then we spread that redemption among still others.

And that action is called "evangelism". Spreading the Gospel, the Good News.

So you see, the Bible, the Spirit, and your faith are all playing parts in this action and activity. Is all that action going to save you? No. It's all a result of Who saves you. But the actions show you and grow you. They show you God is at work in you, even when you doubt. And they grow you. You see what's real about faith, and what was a cartoon of true faith, that was you when you were a child.

OK, I'm told I shell-shock people, but your questions -- oh, your questions are so doggone great! They break open the sky. I really hope for your growth in Christ, can I pray for you?

Read Ephesians chapters 4, 5, and 6. God wants us to grow up to be better people.

4:22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
