Hi, I'm a fairly new Christian. Found God (or God found me) just last year.

So I'm curious as to how you interpret the cross.

Certainly, it's the shape of the device that Jesus died on. But I'm fairly certain that there is more than just that.

Please elaborate. Thanks.

Well, it was a horrible and shamefull cursed way to die - not a pretty sight and very very painful. It was used as a torture to extract the most pain, shame and punishment from a victim.
It was part of the Old Testament law:

Deu. 21:22 And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:
23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God; ) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Jesus bore our shame and penalty upon the cross for us as men. God came in the manifestation of man, identifying Himself as a man and lived a perfect life, not having a man for a father, but the Holy Ghost. It was by means of the miracle of the virgin birth that Jesus did not inherit the nature of sin and death. After living and giving His testimony, pleasing the Father and doing His will, He gave His perfect life for our lives of sin - once and for all.

Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our message? To whom will the LORD reveal his saving power?
2 My servant grew up in the LORD’s presence like a tender green shoot, sprouting from a root in dry and sterile ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him.
3 He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was despised, and we did not care.
4 ¶ Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God for his own sins!
5 But he was wounded and crushed for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped, and we were healed!
6 All of us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on him the guilt and sins of us all.
7 He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led as a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.
8 From prison and trial they led him away to his death. But who among the people realized that he was dying for their sins—that he was suffering their punishment?
9 He had done no wrong, and he never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave.
10 ¶ But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and fill him with grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have a multitude of children, many heirs. He will enjoy a long life, and the LORD’s plan will prosper in his hands.
11 When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of what he has experienced, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.
12 I will give him the honors of one who is mighty and great, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among those who were sinners. He bore the sins of many and interceded for sinners.

Thx raphe.

WashedClean: What I'm saying is that the cross that you see at church, the cross in your avatar, etc. ... What exactly is the purpose of seeing it? For example, like a reminder that Jesus died for our sins, etc.

Obviously, there is more meaning to the cross than just that ... I am trying to dive deeper into that meaning.

The empty cross signifies the resurrection and reminds us that we too have been raised from the old life of sin and death into new life with the Spirit of God within us. This is also symbolized by the baptism. Death to self signified by the plunging into water and then coming forth clean and to a new life in Christ. Our communion is rich with Him in symbol and in reality, as you will find out in your daily walk and as you submit yourself to His guidance.

Romans 6:3 Or have you forgotten that when we became Christians and were baptized to become one with Christ Jesus, we died with him?
4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised as he was.
6 Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.
7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.
8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also share his new life.

One way to look at cross is to think the vertical line connecting heaven and earth - God and a human being and the horisontal line connecting human beings.

On the graveyards crosses are not a symbol of death but a symbol of eternal life, as OP writes Christ has destroyed death.

And when I watch crucifix I think that God has opened his arms to show his love. He is waiting for me to come to him so that he can hug me.

As others have said, I see the cross as a reminder of what Jesus did for me - and of my forgiveness as a result.

I've only been a Christian for a few months, but I debated with myself about whether I wanted to wear a cross on a chain around my neck. On the one hand, I want it to be a visible, public sign that I am a Christian to anyone I might come across. On the other hand, I don't want to be showy or show-off-y in any way, or come across as all "look at me, look how good a Christian I am because I wear a cross", which is how I know some people take that, unfortunately.

I finally decided to wear one, and I chose a small, very simple, plain, unadorned cross that I wear on the same chain as another pendant my husband gave me several years ago. When I obsessively play with it like I tend to do, it reminds me again of the sacrifice Jesus made for me, and I'm glad to have it on. I think I need that reminder, and probably need to remember it a lot more than I do.

The Cross signifies two distinct actions taken, one on the part of fallen Humanity, the other taken by God. For our part it was the most hideous offence that could be perpet- trated, murdering the only innocence Human Being. Yet, in the midst of the worst we could do, God, in the same moment, was performing the greatest act of love toward those who were committing such a vile deed. The Cross signifies the "worst" WE could do, and at the same time, the greatest act of love God could perform in our behalf.

For me the cross of Christ is the means by which we deny our soul, or the life of the soul (Luke 9:23-24). Our boast is not something of our self but of the cross. To take the cross is to deny our life and live by the life of another, that is the life of Christ is us. (Galations 2:20)

So I always try to check with the Lord about everything I say or do and if it is not of the Lord I must take the cross, deny the soul, and live according to His life.

So you are quite correct in that there is much more to the cross than the physical symbol, rather, the real essence of the cross (and just about everything else in the New Testament) is spiritual.

it represents all that everyone has said and so much more. it represents all that he duid for us, victory over sin and death, healing, making a way for us to approach god, his atonement for sin, giving man back his rightful place as long as we are in him, and more.
