Has anyone actually seen a "second baptist" etc? I have traveled quite a but and my experience is that they usually have some other name, like Fairview Baptist or Heritage Baptist. I am sure there are some who name them in numerical order but I don't remember ever seeing one.

My experiences down here in the south USofA is the majority of 2nd Baptist Churches are predominately African-American-centric. Of course this isn't always the case but, again, in my experience that's what I've seen.

It's a shame, really since we're all family and race should not be a determining factor for fellowship.

No, race should not be a factor. The church I was involved in in Michigan, in a town label the 'whitist town in America' (??) was very tied to a church in Detroit that was not white. We had events together and our pastors were great friends. It was a a great experience. Great music too!

There is a Second Baptist Church in my town. The Yellow Pages also show a First Korean Baptist, First Chinese Baptist, First Mexican Baptist.

Well, it doesn't mean "WE'RE NO. ONE!" :D

Good call. I wasn't thinking in that direction. What is the equivalent of the SBC in the north?

There was a Northern Baptist Convention, which now goes by the name American Baptist Churches USA, but they've been mainline liberals since the early 1900's. The breakaway conservative groups include the Conservative Baptist Association of America and General Association of Regular Baptist Churches. There really isn't a northern convention with overwhelming numbers in the north like the SBC in the south.

You drive into town and the "First Baptist Church" you run into.

Or, as George Wallace said once:

I wonder what would happen if people driving along saw a sign that said "Last Baptist Church"? I bet it would be full!

God Bless

Till all are one.

There's a Second Baptist in Dallas, but it's a very small church that doesn't look to have grown in the 30+ years I've lived here. In fact, it looks like it might be a dwindling, older, congregation. Nothing like the big Baptist mega-churches we have so many of in Dallas.
