As you write, ideas will come, you'll get thoughts out, you'll be able to see what you want, and what you will want to toss...its all of a process, but you can do it.

Your writing style(s) will emerge if you take the time to write, journal, free flow write. I second what's already been said and think you are on the right track. :)

Sincerely,
Templedweller:)

On second thought, perhaps my advice was a bit trite. I well remember sitting down to write my first stories, then not knowing what the first words should be.

If this describes your situation, try this:

Start the story with the words "There was". Write 2500 words (about 10 published pages).

After 2500 words, stop. Go outside for a walk. Play with the dog. Get a good night's sleep.

Start again. Tell the beginning of the story anew, using different words. Include new things you've thought of. Nix stuff you've decided against. Experiment. Have fun with it.

Again, after 2500 words, stop. Let it rest for the day. Sleep on it.

Do it again. This time, tighten up your writing. Eliminate unnecessary words and elements. Your 2500 words will take you farther into the story because your writing will be more compact, more precise.

Hopefully, by this time, you'll have found the thread of your story, and your story will have found its own voice.

If not, keep trying. One story took almost 40 attempts before everything clicked. When it finally did, I thought, "Why didn't I just think of that in the first place?"

Best of luck.

Hang in there and keep at it. Try to write everyday, especially on those days when you don't want to, even if it's only a few sentences. It's funny, on the days when I struggle with my writing, or I absolutely abhor what I'm writing, while I write it, I generally end up liking what I've written far more than those days when it comes "easy". Good luck.

Some advice for you is to keep everything you've written no matter how terrable it seems at the time. I've gone months with out looking at something that I thought was terrible and it turnned out that it really wasn't that bad.

And remeber this is all just advise you can take what you want and leave what you don't like. If you have something that your not sure about read it aloud, send it to someone else, get opinions, those really help, especilly when your stuck.

A couple of other things I've asked my English teachers before is to skim something I've written and give suggestions (or a teacher you trust). It can usually can be a pretty good help.

Another thing to do is to write something in word and save it--that way, you can save it when you get bored. You may get inspiration later, and be able to add to it.

I'm also sure anyone would read it and give advice.

I've got a 60,000+ word novel and it's taken me 10 years (many nights of sleeping on it). I have 10 chapters left (YAY!). It is a HUGE undertaking and there is no way I could have gone on continuously had I not had the entire story in my head first (and I outlined it) and I started out with smaller stories first. Definitely start small! I also agree with what is said in regards to gleaning. If I haven't touched it in a while I will start in the beginning and go through and add and take out stuff as needed. I added a LOT of text in there and just now rearranged the beginning of how it starts to make it more interesting for a reader. Get the basics down and then go through and add depth.
