  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

There are lots of tourists visiting the Vatican, and I see no harm in providing a place where they can eat quickly and reasonably. If they have a busy day of sightseeing they might not have time for that leisurely lunch on the piazza, no matter how tempting and delightful it seems.

In this day and age it doesn't surprise me in the tiniest. I'm with sp, there is no way I'm eating there (or any fast food) when I'm in Europe. Then again I almost never eat fast food anyway, but even if I did, not there. That'd be like going to the Sistine Chapel and instead of looking up you mill about some Elvis glow in the dark velvet "paintings" nearby. Gross.

Pizza hut is nasty. Too greasy and the crust tastes wierd.
The best thing you can say about Pizza Hut is it's not as bad as Dominos. But then again neither is a pile of dirt. About the only passable chain pizza I've ever had was Papa Johns, but I'd far (far) rather go to a good mom n pop place.

This is why we have our monasteries in the middle of the desert in Egypt, to avoid all this worldly nonsense...

Thankfully there doesn't seem to be anything remotely like McDonalds within 1000km of St Catherine's Monastery at Mt Sinai.

Unfortunately there is a McDonalds in Thessaloniki, which puts it within an hours drive from at least 20 monasteries :(

Yeah, see...we can't escape it, really. There are other places in Egypt with monasteries that are not so close to a McDonald's (I just didn't highlight them because then I couldn't make that joke), but there's always going to be one somewhere where it is completely out of place and likewise probably offensive. Apparently there are three McDonald's in Mecca, Saudi Arabia (though one is just a drive through, not a full restaurant...that's...better? Yeah, I don't care). Apparently kuffar Christians are so terrible that they are not allowed to even set foot in that most holy of Islamic cities, but a giant hamburger-serving clown that is practically the #1 symbol of America's dirty, decadent, disbelieving culture is fine. Go figure.

I do find it a bit weird in the case of Vatican City, because as I understand it it is it's own sovereign micro-nation, so presumably the local Vatican officials would've had some kind of controlling say over whether or not the McDonald's could be there (which is probably not the case in Greece outside of Mt. Athos, or anywhere in Egypt). And now there it is. I know they've got pilgrims to feed (and RCs don't really fast anyway in the modern day, so that aspect of it being there isn't going to come into play), but I would hope that those people would be going there for the spiritual enlightenment, not fries and intestinal discomfort.

One thing I thought was pretty cool about the Maccas in Thessaloniki is their sales were hit so hard during lenten periods that they had to add a few fasting items to the menu. I don't know if Athens had the same problem but Thessaloniki is a bit special. Highest density of Churches in the world!
