It works both ways, why give extra effort if it gets taken advantage of. Employers don’t want to reward or retain good employees.

I certainly would not disagree with you. The blame goes both ways.

I also worked in the private sector for many years. I took a huge paycut to join the government simply because of the retirement benefits. There are very few companies that offer pension plans and you won't find them for white collar workers. Health care plans are also great compared to the private sector.

It's true that pensions are fairly rare these days, but is a "huge pay cut" really worth it? Maybe, but it's very dependent on the specifics. I wouldn't be surprised if you could've socked away that extra income and come out ahead.

Well, I'm retired now and I can say that, yes, a pension is very helpful along with socking money away into a 401K plan (which is what I did). It is a shame that a number of companies have done away with pensions.
