"We are at war but the Navy isn't invited" We were told by our Commodore. He went on to say "You were called up by mistake! Currently, you are a greater asset to the enemy due to the money you are costing us! he sooner you are de mobilised, the better!"
The Navy, in the words of Sci Fi author Robert H Hienlin is a "Non combatant service force" Currently, the average Sailor, unless he is a SEAL, SeaBee, EOD, Marine combat corpsman, or other part of the "Cammo clad Navy" instead of the "Blackshow Navy" will only be able to talk about swabbing decks in the Persian Gulf and standing petty inspections. Currently, the Navy has to shed 3,000 bodies by October in order to get down to its mandated maximum manning level of 329,000. Getting in is currently difficult. Staying in is going to be difficult as well. For the first year, any misconduct will get you an ELS (Entry level separation). They now have a program called "Perform to serve" Where you must prove yourself worthy of re enlisting or be forced out at the end of your enlistment.
The truth is that The Navy is not involved in the current war. It is a place to "Serve in safety" And this is one of the reasons they are grossly overmanned.
If getting involved in the war is your interest, you will need to go Army or Marines, they currently need everyone they can get. The "Blue forces" (Navy and Air Force) currently have a waiting list. Because of this, once you are in, they will look for an excuse to kick you out.
