Maximilian, Margrave of Baden (Maximilian Andreas Friedrich Gustav Ernst August Bernhard; 3 July 1933 – 29 December 2022), also known as Max von Baden, was a German businessman and the head of House of Baden. Through his mother, Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, the second sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he was a first cousin of King Charles III of the United Kingdom.

King Charles III of the United Kingdom is his first cousin. Maximilian is related to most of the nobility in Europa.
It will be interesting to see how many of them will come to his funeral.

He was heir presumptive to the throne of the Grand Duchy of Baden, and in October and November 1918 briefly served as the last chancellor of the German Empire and minister-president of Prussia. He sued for peace on Germany's behalf at the end of World War I based on U.S. President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points, which included immediately transforming the government into a parliamentary system, by handing over the office of chancellor to SPD Chairman Friedrich Ebert and unilaterally proclaiming the abdication of Emperor Wilhelm II. Both events took place on 9 November 1918, the beginning of the Weimar Republic.

Schloss Salem - that is where the Margraves of Baden live in our times.

In 1933, Prince Philip was sent to Schule Schloss Salem in Germany, a school that allowed him to “save school fees” because it was owned by the family of his brother-in-law, Berthold, Margrave of Baden. With the rise of Nazism in Germany during this time, Salem’s Jewish founder, Kurt Hahn, fled persecution and founded Gordonstoun School in Scotland. At the age of 13, Philip moved to Gordonstoun after finishing two terms at Salem.

Our regional newspaper "Badische Neueste Nachrichten = Newest News of the Land of Baden" expects these persons to attend the funeral celebrations:

King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the UK
Kings and Queens of Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Spain
Prince of Monaco and Prince of Liechtenstein.

The family was represented by his wife, Archduchess Valerie of Austria at the Queen's funeral in September. Prince Bernhard also attended with his wife, Stephanie.

A statement from the House of Baden said: 'Max Margrave of Baden died in the early morning hours of December 29, 2022 in Salem Castle.

'Since 1963, Max Margrave of Baden was head of the house at the head of the formerly ruling Grand Ducal Baden Princely House, which from 1112 to 1918 provided the sovereigns in the Baden part of today's federal state of Baden-Württemberg.

Upon the death of his father in 1963, Prince Max became the Margrave of Baden and Head of the House of Zähringen. The Royal Family had extensive agricultural, forestry and industrial holdings, as well as at least three castles, the most prominent of which is Schloss Salem, and the extensive collection of the Grand Ducal House of Baden, which they managed to retain despite financial troubles in the 1990s. Margrave Max led the industrialisation and internationalisation of the Markgräflich Badischen Verwaltung from the 1960s, and after the financial hardships of the 1990s, had stabilised it by his 65th Birthday in 1998, when control of the estates was passed to Hereditary Prince Bernhard. Involved with over 60 clubs and associations, the Margrave founded ‘GermanAid-Baden’, a non-profit organization to support refugees in need in the third world, gaining particular attention for services to Ethiopian refugees in Sudan.

Here is some info about the little known land of Baden:

Baden came into existence in the 12th century as the Margraviate of Baden and subsequently split into various smaller territories that were unified in 1771. In 1803 Baden was raised to Electoral dignity within the Holy Roman Empire. Upon the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Baden became the much-enlarged Grand Duchy of Baden. In 1815 it joined the German Confederation. During the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states, Baden was a centre of revolutionist activities. In 1849, in the course of the Baden Revolution, it was the only German state that became a republic for a short while, under the leadership of Lorenzo Brentano. The revolution in Baden was suppressed mainly by Prussian troops.

The Grand Duchy of Baden remained a sovereign country until it joined the German Empire in 1871. After the revolution of 1918, Baden became part of the Weimar Republic as the Republic of Baden.

The lack of a monarchy in Germany is noticeable. I think if a consensus could have been reached on which royal family to go with and the development into an Empire had not involved a vigorous dose of Prussian militarism maybe the monarchy would have stood a chance in Germany. It is my impression that Germans really do not do things by halves. The Kaiser failed to win his war so all royals must go. But as a result, the stabilizing influence that a constitutional monarchy might have exerted in the post-war period was missing. German society today lacks a certain continuity with the best of its history and the sense of the ceremonial and majestic as a result. I think it was slightly ridiculous that Baden or for that matter Wurttemberg were different kingdoms. Germans are better off together and maybe a monarchy could have been a unifying factor as it was in the UK and one that stopped the tendency to extremes and vacuum filling that characterized the Nazi era.

As it happened, I went to Baden-Baden today to have a look at my meadow plus orchard plus vineyard there - in the beautiful bright sunshine of the January winter sun.
And I also had a look at the Castle of Hohenbaden, the ancient home of the House of Baden.

Let me tell you something about the country of Baden.

Names like Bavaria, Saxony, Prussia are better known.
Baden is a late-comer among the German countries.
Created by Napoleon and too small to be of any danger, but big enough to be helpful for Napoleon, as it is said.
Napoleon lumped together lots of tiny principalities to form a thin stretch along the River Rhine to form the Grand Duchy of Baden.

I think most of its citizen were not really pleased when they found themselves to be citizens of Baden - in the beginning.
But Baden became quite popular in the course of time.
It usually had good government - for the people and by the people.
"Musterländle" became its nickname = "ideal little country".

Now Baden no longer exists as a country.
It has become part of Baden-Württemberg.
But still most people know whether they are Badeners or Württembergers.
And the fact that there still is a "Margrave of Baden" helps to preserve the identity of Baden.

The funeral celebrations are over now.

King Charles III was first cousin to the Margrave of Baden.
And the then Prince Bernhard of Baden (who is the new Margrave now) - was one of the only 30 guests at the funeral celebration for Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

And Bernhard of Baden also came to the funeral celebration for Queen Elizabeth II.

But no member of the British nobility thought it worthy to come to the funeral of the Margrave of Baden, even though there are close family relationships.

Maybe they are too pre-occupied with Harry.
Or they are too haughty.

In any case: Not nice.
