  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I do wash the bathroom rugs in there but it's just old and I bought it used a couple of years ago so....anyway guy came out and supposedly fixed it,but guess what? Still leaks.

And YES this is just a chat thread...whatever we feel like chattin about which lately seems to be day to day stuff

If he said "water pump"....I don't think there is anything fixable there...it needs to be changed out (it looked like a expensive nothing part to me)...if it leaks, then he either didn't or he didn't tighten everything back up. And he should have put it through a cycle to make sure it didn't leak...

I had to replace ours once. Washer went out while my husband was out of work for chemo..no money meant I was willing to try...I couldn't make it worse, I figured. The guy at the parts store was somewhat impressed and touched by my story and gave me the pump at cost.

He did replace the pump so something isn't tightened or IDK what. As far as replacing it myself.... I am glad I did not try that because the stupid pump was corroded to the washer and I would not have had the strength to get it unpried and also I would be fearful of breaking some other part of the washer so....

I changed mine because it was my only hope for getting it done...I wouldn't recommend it because everything was HEAVY and I ended up taking apart several times before I got everything right. I think God might have been giving me something that I could have control over since the cancer stuff ran us.

Totally understand that. The last year of my husband's life was spent mostly watching him...and taking care of his every need or desire we could. Couldn't really go anywhere or do anything. I hated to leave to go to work or anything! Glad I didn't try to tackle the washer. I DID however earlier this year install my first ever new door handles/locks on my front door and screen door! I do what I can :D

I do most everything, partly because its cheaper and I want to build equity in this house. But I also enjoy thinking about it and then doing it. Which so many videos on the web, its easy to find out how to do most things that I don't currently know how to do.

and.....you're a guy! I feel accomplished if I do something and it turns out right, but I'd rather have someone else do some things so I KNOW they will be right, just sayin'

Ya, I understand that. It had taken years to learn all this stuff. That means many hours of thinking about it and using tools. Not everyone has the interest to do that. Tho I'm sure if you had that interest and time you could do about anything around the house.

LOL I might be "able" to do it, but there is a difference in doing it and doing it well. And I'm the kind of person that likes things done right and the second part. I'm kinda old school and think that alot of stuff around the house should be done by a man. Not that women aren't capable (cuz I know alot that are, I'm just not going to be one of them) I feel the same way about cars. I think men should do that. I don't wanna! ;)

I certianly understand that. With as many things that need to be done to keep a family running smoothly today, dividing up things and each person getting good and staying on top of it sure helps to keep the tension down.

I like things done good as well. When I first started doing things, I knew I wasn't going to do them all well. But I figured I could tear it out, buy new and reinstall it at about what it would cost to have a professional come in and do with a good result, but I'd not have learned much.

There are some home improvement things I really enjoy...txturing walls and painting etc...I can patch holes and scratches...and thanks to a gaggle of giggling girls I even learned how to fix my towel racks in the bathroom...
But in all reality, yeah...I'm with Michelle...it's worth paying for someone to do it right and well the first time!

:)

The drive is a bit much...but I'd like to learn how to lay wood floors. I know it isn't supposed to be hard but I'd rather learn on someelse's floor...LOL. "Experience" is often a pretty rough teacher. Part of my retirement dream was to buy an old house...get the bathroom and bedroom livable..then move in and renovate the rest as a project with my hubby. I forgot about this...but this is the first of my old dreams that maybe I can actually see myself doing alone. ("Running a bait shop" dream kind of disappeared when my man who wanted to be a fishing guide died. The smell of worms was only sexy on him. LOL.)

Well, renovating an old house is a lot of work. This is my 2nd house I'm making major improvements to. Its always more time consuming than I think it will be. The homes I've fixed up and simple homes, not the fancy big homes we tend to think of. Those must really be a lot of work. The worst part tho is living in the dust when ever a room has to be torn apart. Thankfully that part is now past for my living room.

Hey dayhiker, I know you used to rent out a room. Can you tell me was it just a 10 x 10 room, did you have your own bathroom, access to the kitchen etc? Since my oldest son is bent on moving out, I might need to rent out his room. His room has actually access to the room in the garage which is half of the garage and has a door going out to the garage too. I was thinking it might not be bad for someone renting they would actually have two rooms. They would not have a separate bathroom, but I do have a fridge in the garage that they could put their food etc in. I use it mainly for drink storage so...

Yes, I did rent a room for 4 yrs. It was a great time. The lady that rented it had 4 rooms she rented. The smallest was 12x12 I think. I started out in a room that was 14x14. Then I moved into her large room that was 14x20, had 2 small closets and one walk in closet. She provided TV for each room and they were furnished, but I did move a couple pieces of my own furniture in.

There was a common kitchen that was pretty small. [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse], no stove, sink to wash dishes in. Each person had a one door of the cabinets. But after I'd been there a few months, I asked if we could put 6 feet of kitchen cabinets in one corner. I was doing a lot of cooking. She agreed and then I wired it.

There was a common bathroom on the 2nd floor and a 1/2 bath 1st. I had a standup shower in my room. The landlord's part of the house was locked so we couldn't walk into her side. She used to keep it open, but had a couple of problems. Guy stole some of her old albums.

Do a tenant at will. Each of you can give a 30 day notice. Set rules in writing for the tenant to sign his/her agreement. Like wash all dishes after each use. No loud misic after 10PM etc. Check the law, if you are having problems with a live in tenant in MA they can be evicted in 48 hrs.

I wanted to remodel an old Texas dog trot house. They are mostly simple houses unless the owner made a lot of additions and upgrades over the years.

Now, I don't know where God will place me in a few years...if it is just me, I could pick a fairly small house (with history) and just make it what I want it to be.
