Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Even if God forgives, wouldn't it still be a sin to break a vow and if so, are there not consequences to that action? Even in the Old Testament, when a woman was allowed to be freed from her vow by her father or husband, they had to bear her punishment.

well .... certainly we should not go into the "mind set" that we can sin .... and take the attitude of it don't matter .... God will forgive it .... like was said .... God looks at one's motives .... if something changes and we need to reconsider the matter and in doing so make a better decision then we should do so.

There is a natural consequence when we sin .... it's not like God has a "big stick" He wants to whack us with .... we are to learn from our mistakes (sin) ... when we have learned .... then we ask for forgiveness and repent and if we do so with a sincere heart ... then God does indeed forgives us .... picks us up and we begin again.

He is extremely patient with us.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

1 Timothy 1:16
But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

Romans 2:4
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

so ... is it a sin? Maybe ... maybe not ... Depends on the motive .... if considered sinful by the Lord, we will hear the small still voice of the Lord and the Holy Spirit will bring us to repentance .. the only sin that is not forgivable is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Joel 2:13

And rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.

Psalm 103:8
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

His desire is that we reach repentance ... turn from sin.

God looks at the heart .... and He is the only one that knows it.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5
Love (God) is patient and kind; love (God) does not envy or boast; it (God) is not arrogant or rude. It (God) does not insist on its (His) own way; it (God) is not irritable or resentful;

Psalm 86:15
But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

We have a awesome God who is loving and merciful and faithful. AMEN!
