Book genealogy Jesus Christ son David son Abraham.

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:2

αβρααμ εγεννησεν τον ισαακ ισαακ δε εγεννησεν τον ιακωβ ιακωβ δε εγεννησεν τον ιουδαν και τους αδελφους αυτου

Abraham begat the Isaac Isaac and begat the Jacob Jacob and begat the Judah and the brothers him

Abraham became the father of Isaac, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers;

ιουδας δε εγεννησεν τον φαρες και τον ζαρα εκ της θαμαρ φαρες δε εγεννησεν τον εσρωμ εσρωμ δε εγεννησεν τον αραμ

Judas and begat the Phares and the Zara of the Thamar Phares and begat the Esrom Esrom and begat the Aram

and Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez became the father of Esrom and Esrom became the father of Aram:

Salmon and egennesen the Boaz by the Rachab Boaz and egennesen the Obed by the Ruth Obed and egennesen the Jesse

And Salmon egennesen Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz egennesen Obed by Ruth, and Obed egennesen Jesse;

Here is Strongs dictionary definition of egennesen (γεννά&#969:
From a variation of genos; to procreate (properly, of the father, but by extension of the mother); figuratively, to regenerate -- bear, beget, be born, bring forth, conceive, be delivered of, gender, make, spring.

Putting egennesen into english is difficult, I don't like the word "begat", it's not a modern english word. No one says begat. Conceived seems a little bit, well, personal. I used "produced" before, but I'm not really happy with that. Produced by Salmon, directed by Rahab, that seems too "Hollywood."
NASB uses the phrase "to Salmon was born Boaz", this kind of avoids the issue of what to do with egennesen, and it's a little stilted, don't you think?
Is there an active verb in modern english that means egennesen? I'll leave egennesen in the translation, you all know what it means.

Jesse and egennesen the David the King David and the King egennesen the Solomona by the (feminine form) the Uriah

And Jesse egennesen King David and King David egennesen Solomon by Uriah's wife


This verse has some greek that is hard to translate just right (I'm a beginner). Names in greek are preceeded by an article, ie-"the David", and adjectives also have the article, so "the David the King" is "King David".

Word orders are different in greek, so the 2nd David comes before the conjunction de, so it looks like "the king egennesen the solomon".

The femine article της is used, but Bathsheba's name is not used. της is the feminine article "the", but can also mean she or her, she of Uriah. I like how the KJV and the NAS handle this, they add the words "that had been the wife" and italicise them indicating that they are not in the greek. I just wrote "Uriah's wife", but wife isn't in the greek either.

In greek, the name endings often change, depending on the names position in the sentence (subject or predicate). Ozian ends with ν in this verse; in verse 9, Ozias ends with ς. NAS calls him Uzziah.

My name is τιμοθεω, but it can also be Timothee, Timotheon, Timotheus, or Timotheou.

(egennethe is passive, egennesen is active)

Rewrite: Now Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called the Christ.

πασαι ουν αι γενεαι απο αβρααμ εως δαυιδ γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες και απο δαυιδ εως της μετοικεσιας βαβυλωνος γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες και απο της μετοικεσιας βαβυλωνος εως του χριστου γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες

All so the generations from Abra'am until David generations fourteen and from David until the deportation Babylon generations fourteen and from the deportation Babylon until the Christ generations fourteen

So all the generations from Abraham until David, fourteen generations.
And from David until the Babylon Deportation, fourteen generations.
And from the Babylon Deportation until Christ, fourteen generations.

του δε ιησου χριστου η γεννησις ουτως ην μνηστευθεισης γαρ της μητρος αυτου μαριας τω ιωσηφ πριν η συνελθειν αυτους ευρεθη εν γαστρι εχουσα εκ πνευματος αγιου

The and Jesus Christ the birth as-so was engaged for the mother his Mary the Joseph before the together he found in womb having of spirit holy

And Jesus Christ's birth was so: Mary, his mother, was engaged (to) Joseph. But before meeting he found (her) having in (the) womb (who was) of (the) holy spirit.

ιωσηφ δε ο ανηρ αυτης δικαιος ων και μη θελων αυτην παραδειγματισαι εβουληθη λαθρα απολυσαι αυτην

Ioseph but the man (or husband) her just was and not wanting her disgraced planned secret divorce her

But Joseph her husband was just and not wanting her disgraced, planned to secretly divorce her,
