Thought it would be fun to throw this together in tandem with the Matthew 1:1 (Greek) thread.

Like that one, this thread is a verse-by-verse translation of Matthew. However, the text used is a Hebrew manuscript confiscated from Jews in the early 16th Century called DuTillet. I chose it mainly because it does not appear to be a polemic against the gospel like others and because it appears to be copied from ancient sources. You can find out more about it here: Hebrew Matthew Project.

I'm not sure how far I'll take it, but I plan to at least get the first chapter down. I'll include a few notes as well.

(1) The name Yeshua has no Ayin, so I followed the spelling.
(2) The name David is defectiva. This is curious because, at least in terms of biblical texts, all later scrolls like Ezra-Nehemiah use plene, but earlier texts like Samuel use defectiva. Dead Sea Scrolls also use plene for David--like 1QIsaA and 4QSamA.

I'm doing this translation myself from the Hebrew, not the Greek. The manuscript is not based on the Greek (as will become evident).

Of course the manuscript is based on the Greek (probably via Latin, given the Latinisms in the text). There are no ancient Hebrew versions of Matthew.

And I note that, already in the first verse, the manuscript shows its anti-Christian bias by changing "Jesus Christ" to "Jesus."

The evidence directly from this manuscript is evidence enough of your errant claim of Greek dependence. And the witness of the church fathers (Papias, Irenaeus, Origen, and others) are witness enough of your errant claim against any ancient Hebrew version of Matthew. But I'm sure you could care less about evidence.

And I note that, already in the first verse, the manuscript shows its anti-Christian bias by changing "Jesus Christ" to "Jesus."

If that is an "anti-Christian" bias, then it baffles me why it would include other things later on that are exactly opposed to what you say (even in this very chapter). Perhaps you think the writer decided only to be anti-Christian at this one point and then changed his mind entirely with the rest of the text.

At any rate, what is a "change" in a text is determined by Textual Criticism, not tendentiously biased prejudice against a manuscript one has never examined. If something has dropped out at this point, it may be reflected by the fact that an Ayin has unnaturally dropped out in the name of Yeshua.

This is a medieval manuscript, one of the Rabbinical translations of Matthew, more than 1,400 years after the oldest Greek manuscripts. It's obviously derived from the Greek (possibly via Latin).

The DuTillet manuscript also includes anti-Christian polemic; it is widely recognised by scholars as an anti-Christian work. See, for example, Pinchas E. Lapide, Hebrew in the Church: The Foundations of Jewish-Christian Dialogue (1984). I'm not sure why you insist on using it (although the website you refer to has an obvious agenda).

And the witness of the church fathers (Papias, Irenaeus, Origen, and others) are witness enough of your errant claim against any ancient Hebrew version of Matthew.

The church fathers suggest an original Hebrew Sayings of Our Lord by Matthew -- now lost, but often identified with Q. That's not quite the same as a Hebrew version of The Gospel According to Matthew.
