On Thursday, a jury found former Longwood mayor and Seminole County Republican chair Ben Paris guilty of interfering in their state Senate race in their county by making an illegal campaign contribution in someone else's name.

The state successfully linked Paris to Jestine Iannotti and previously convicted political strategist Eric Foglesong in a scheme to front Iannotti as an independent candidate in the 2020 district nine race for state Senate.

Foglesong and Iannotti face trial on more serious charges. Both have hearings in October.

The House Ethics Committee has quietly reopened a probe into Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, Punchbowl News reports, citing sources familiar with the investigation.

The outlet reports that the committee's investigators have begun re-examining allegations surrounding the controversial lawmaker, months after it deferred an investigation into 41-year-old Gaetz following a request from the Department of Justice, which was conducting its own investigation. [which resulted in no charges]

According to Punchbowl, the Ethics Committee is now reexamining allegations against him, but hasn't yet decided whether it will move forward with a special investigative subcommittee, but if it does, the move would be publicly disclosed.

[From 2021]: "The Committee is aware of public allegations that Representative Matt Gaetz may have engaged in sexual misconduct and/or illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gift, in violation of House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct."

The young woman at the center of Rep. Matt Gaetz’s sex trafficking scandal now says publicly—for the first time—that lobbyist Chris Dorworth raped and trafficked her.
A Florida Republican lobbyist’s attempt to sue the young woman at the center of the Rep. Matt Gaetz underage sex trafficking scandal has backfired in spectacular fashion, with the woman filing a response that repeatedly accuses the lobbyist of raping her.

Dorworth was a side-character in most of the reporting about the investigation. The sparse news stories about him mostly focused on his alleged scheme to run a spoiler candidate that would unfairly tilt a local election. Unexplored were the details that several sources briefed on the investigation had told The Daily Beast: that federal agents were also exploring whether they could target Dorworth for alleged sexual interactions with the same underage teen girl. As Dorworth would later describe in court papers, “the investigation progressed from allegations [of] sexual activity to allegations of obstruction of justice.” However, the DOJ never charged him with either crime—and he largely avoided the limelight.

[Other reporting:] In a pre-emptive 2020 pardon request to then President Donald Trump, the disgraced Seminole County tax collector [Greenberg] wrote that Dorworth—identified as a “prominent lobbyist for Ballard Partners”—hosted parties at his home where a number of men, specifically including Gaetz, paid to have sex with young girls, including A.B.


It seems she reached out to Dorworth and "offered the opportunity to resolve any legal disputes without publication of her allegations,” in exchange for cash. He said no, and wisely or not, sued her (and Greenberg and his wife among others), so she has responded by making her allegations in her filings.

Investigators from the House Ethics Committee have begun reaching out to witnesses as part of a recently revived investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, focused on allegations that he may have engaged in sexual misconduct, illicit drug use or other misconduct.

At least one witness in Florida told CNN they have spoken to investigators about the Republican congressman in recent weeks about alleged lobbying violations, and sources familiar with the Ethics Committee probe say other witnesses also have been contacted.

Now chaired by Republican Rep. Michael Guest of Mississippi, the panel quietly restarted its investigation earlier this year without publicly laying out its targets anew.

An aggrieved McCarthy weighs leaving the House with his GOP foes on his mind​

The California Republican reserved his harshest attacks for Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who led the charge for McCarthy’s ouster. McCarthy continually accused Gaetz of only going after him because of a House Ethics Committee probe he’s facing, a charge the GOP hardliner has repeatedly denied.

“I don’t believe them to be conservatives,” McCarthy said of the eight Republicans. “It’s driven by Gaetz, and it was all based upon an ethics complaint that happened in the last Congress. He would throw his country away to try to protect himself for what would come out as the truth.”

“If the Ethics Committee never does anything to Gaetz, then Gaetz was successful in stopping probably what rightfully should come to him,” McCarthy said.

Gaetz brushed off the attacks.

“Thoughts and prayers to the former speaker as he works through his grief,” Gaetz said.

The House Ethics Committee started looking into the matter.

Then when the DOJ criminal investigation started, the Committee stopped.

The DOJ chose not to file charges.

The Ethics Committee reopened its own investigation (and is now gaining the benefit of some of what the DOJ learned in its investigation).

A photo of Gaetz and the woman has also been turned over to the committee, according to sources briefed on the matter. According to the sources, the photo, which is dated May 19, 2017, shows the woman smiling in a selfie next to Gaetz

A spokesperson for Gaetz told ABC News, "Rep. Gaetz has no knowledge of these activities by Mr. Greenberg and was not involved in them. Rep. Gaetz has never paid for sex. Rep. Gaetz does not know anything about the woman you're referencing, though he takes thousands of selfies each year."

Gaetz' texts to woman he doesn't know anything about:

"Hey -- any interest in flying on a private plane to the keys May 19-21?" Gaetz allegedly wrote to the woman, who was older than 21 at the time, according to multiple sources familiar with the messages.

"2 guys, 4 girls. A very high-quality adventurous group,"

"Yeah I'm in," replied the woman [although apparently she did not actually go on this trip]

The messages, if accurate, mark the first known example of alleged direct private communication between the Florida congressman and a woman who his one-time close associate Joel Greenberg told investigators he had been paying to have sex with other men, according to documents and interviews with multiple sources.

Witness Told Feds She Was Paid for Sex Parties With Matt Gaetz​

The Daily Beast can now report that this woman told prosecutors in 2021 that she [adult at the time] had sex with Gaetz at a drug-fueled party that she was paid to attend, according to the woman’s attorney.

“She told them that she and lots of girls were provided all kinds of controlled substances at these parties,” the [woman's] lawyer said, confirming a number of news reportsabout the gatherings. The heavy use of drugs and alcohol was a hurdle for investigators, he said, since it muddled memories of the events.

At one point, the lawyer said, this person close to Gaetz berated his client for information about what she may tell anyone investigating Gaetz, and she felt that the clear intent was to pressure her to keep her mouth shut.

Last year, prosecutors announced they were declining to file charges against Gaetz, while also refusing to publicly offer an explanation. That decision, almost exactly one year ago, gave rise to frustration and outrage among key witnesses in the case, including women who had come forward to provide intimate and detailed accounts of their interactions, according to interviews with lawyers and witnesses in the matter.

[T]he Ethics Committee met Thursday afternoon behind closed doors to discuss the Gaetz case, which also involves allegations of public corruption, solicitation of prostitution, habitual use of hard drugs, bribes or impermissible gifts, campaign finance violations, and exhibiting nude photos of sexual partnerson the House floor.

Rep. Matt Gaetz subpoenaed in defamation suit by woman he allegedly had sex with as minor: Sources​

[Just to try to set the stage for this spaghetti ball of complexity (and see the quote below). The defamation lawsuit was filed by a close friend of Gaetz ["former Florida House member and lobbyist Chris Dorworth"]. He is suing Gaetz-associate and convicted sex trafficker Joel Greenberg, Greenberg's wife as well as the then-minor woman]

Dorworth alleged in the lawsuit a complicated effort to falsely accuse him of "child sex trafficking, sex with a minor, prostitution, obstruction of justice, and an illegal ghost candidate scheme," according to the suit.

Gaetz could be asked under oath about the allegations involving a minor.

Gaetz was issued the subpoena, which has not been previously reported, by attorneys representing the woman who is now in her 20s and was at the center of a years-long investigation by the Justice Department into allegations that the Florida congressman had sex with her when she was a minor, sources said.

"Congressman Gaetz received a witness subpoena in an ongoing lawsuit between outside parties," a spokesperson for Gaetz said in a statement. "He is not being sued, and he is neither a plaintiff nor a defendant in this matter."

When news of the allegations against Gaetz first broke in March 2021, Gaetz denied them in an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News, where he also claimed the 17-year-old girl "doesn't exist."
