Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Who is the rock and why or how do others understand this passage?

I grew up Lutheran, and we were told that it was a pun, and that it was a humorous reference to Peter, who was first among the Apostles. While I don't accept the Catholic notion of "apostolic succession", I have never seen any reason to abandon this simple and straightforward interpretation of the passage.

Actually, I agree with you here.
Eph 2:19-22 KJV
(19) Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
(20) And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
(21) In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
Even Peter is a foundation, but no more than Matthias!! :)

Didn't we just cover this...? I think I've covered this a few times. ;)

Anyroad, as to the gates of hell... I don't have the greek in front of me, but I believe "gates" is a term that references "keeping in". Therefore, the pronouncment made by the little stone concerning the Rock (there is no other Rock like Him - 1 Sam 2:2) is the pronouncement that shall defeat the grave.

Grave where is thy victory? The grave cannot prevail over the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

That's my story, but I'm not married to it. :)

We did talk about it but the 'other' topic was closed so I opened this one to continue.

I let the bible interpret itself on this one. There are alot more verse that interpret the Rock being GOD, not Peter. I am just too tied tonight to list all of them. That is what is so awesome about God's word, the world might change, man might change, but God's word NEVER changes!
AMEN!!!!!!

Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Deuteronomy 32:31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

2 Samuel 22:2 ¶And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

2 Samuel 22:47 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.

2 Samuel 23:3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

Psalms 18:2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Psalms 28:1 ¶<<A Psalm of David.>> Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

Psalms 42:9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

Psalms 62:2 He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

Psalms 62:6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

Psalms 62:7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

Don't forget these ones GEL

1 Samuel 4:1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

1 Samuel 5:1 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.

1 Samuel 7:12 Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

Sorry I just realized this isn't that clear.. God is also called "My Ebenezer.."

Ebenezer as in "rock of refuge or rock of help" (not as in Scrooge :D )

I think Peter was the first person that God revealed whom Christ was. The first rock or stone that makes up the many stones of the Church, or Temple, (other than Jesus who is the corner stone). The gates of hell are death and the grave (and probably the forces of hell).
