  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

At Mass, I'm only aware of the time every five minutes or so. That interval strangely coincides with my significant others daughter poking me and asking : How much longer do we have before we can go?

:sigh:

She loves Sunday school which always excites her because she's preparing for her First Communion and her first chance to "Really see Jesus." (which she attends immediately before we head over to Mass)... but I think she's stuck in her old Baptist church thinking... Bible class and then you get to go kiddo. I'm trying to instill on her that she'll learn just as much, if not more, if she pays attention to the Mass, as she will in her Sunday school class.

You want to know what is really cool? When your four year old ask you at Mass, Mom, what are they getting in their mouths when they go up there, and I say, it's God. And her eyes get as wide as saucers and she says with a look of total wonder on her face..."I didn't know that!" It's pretty cool.

Just looked in my closet and I found a tape. In it, it was a interview with a pastor who was explaining tha if I was just reading this tape, that everyone had been raptured already.

Has anyone seen a bunch of clothes on the ground? I'm wondering if there is anyone left at Fast Mass. I better head out there just in caaa...

How about a drive through Mass. No, I do not feel like mass is to long. Have you ever been to a Baptist sermon. Some run 60 to 90 minutes. I should know since I have attended many services. I find mass an enrichment and very much more religious than my old church of the Baptist. Maybe I will feel different after a while, since I'm in RCIA right now and I'm as my teacher say that I'm on fire for the Catholic church. By the way, I have attended Catholic Mass for the past 30 years with my Catholic wife and just recently realized what I have been missing.
Some people at our church use to leave right after communion. The head priest started stopping Mass and telling everyone to allow time for the people to leave early. Then we could resume Mass. I must tell you this does not happen but on few occasions now.
I guess what I mean, would we tell Jesus if he was sitting in at church that Mass is to long or we have to leave early for something that we have going on. Well, I feel that he is there among us and I would never even think of telling Jesus I don't have time for you today. I feel what ever time it takes the priest to complete Mass is fine with me. Thirty minutes or ninety minutes, what ever it takes. Just my opinion.

Though I haven't used it in a while, my standard reply to "Mass/Eucharistic Adoration is too long" is: if you can't handle an hour or so out of your week, how are you going to handle an eternity in heaven worshipping God? ;)

I have been to a couple of turbo Masses. When our regular parish priest was on retreat we had another priest. Mass only lasted 30 minutes. No singing and a very short homily.

Ash Wednesday I was in another city visiting and we (my husband and I) went to an early morning Mass. That lasted only 20 minutes and it was a rather large church and it was full. And the whole congregation went up twice, once for the ash and the second time for communion.

It was the nearest I have been to a "Drive-thru" Mass.

By the way, one of the longest Masses I have been to was last Sunday the 28. of November.

That was because there was a conditionally baptism, a confirmation, a wedding and first Communion.

And I was in the middle of it all. That Mass lasted close to two hours.

When I was Catholic I used to pray like crazy the priest would use Eucharistic Prayer #1 (The Roman Cannon) because I think that is a most beautiful prayer. That prayer in itself would add an additional 5 minutes to the mass. The mass too long? Nah, too short maybe, but not too long!

You know, the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the time of the Mass, ranging from 40-50minutes is too long. It isn't practical and sends most people who would go to Mass straight to do other things with their time.

The average couple works 40-50 hours a week and due to economical restrictions, they are forced to work almost 6 days a week between work and household chores. Unfortunately, if they have kids, they never get anytime to themselves or enough shopping time and this creates stress in their lives. So there is never any consideration to attending Mass.

I believe the solution is to have a Fast-Mass. This would ensure attendance and possibly even boost the finances of each individual parish. Let's get real. People need quick graces and don't have time or care for meditation, prayer life and an immersion into Church history, philosophy and theology.

The Fast Mass would work on a large scale remodeling project. Masses would be shortened by 15 minutes with the removal of the homily (who wants to be preached to, right?) and inbetween Masses, a drive through Eucharist window would be applicable. Here's how it works:

You drive up to a speaker where the voice of a priest hears your confession. Now you are in a State of Grace. That was easy, huh? No work on your part!

Next, you drive up to a window similar to the ones at McDonald's (let's make it easy on you since you don't want to think) where the hands of a priest come out and provide the Eucharist! And then you drive away! Imagine that! Now you can go continue your shopping!

Gone are the legalisms of a Church that needs to be more like the first century. And how long was the Mass back then? Who cares and who knows! But it couldn't have been this long! (and forget the Mass before the Novus Ordo...talk about 90 minutes or more!)

This, IMO will solve all the problems!

(note: I hope you know I'm joking)

Forgive me PeterPaul,
but I didn't have time to read the last line your post, there is too much stress in my life...gotta go !...but before I go....
I'm glad you weren't living during the time of St Paul, but that may have been one of your relatives who fell out of the third story
to the ground .(Acts 20:9)

The Divine Liturgy lasts that long on many Sundays, especially if it is a feast day and there are a bunch of troparia to the saints to be sung.
